James "Jim" Joseph Underbrink, a cherished husband, dedicated educator, proud papaw, and veteran, passed away on January 19, 2026, at the age of 77. Born on July 16, 1948, in
Kingsville, Texas, Jim demonstrated a lifelong commitment to learning and service that deeply impacted all who knew him.
Jim attended Ricardo Grade School and later graduated from H.M. King High School. He pursued higher education, earning his Bachelor's degree from Texas A&I University and a Master's degree from Corpus Christi State University. In August 1972, Jim embarked on a fulfilling teaching career that spanned nearly three decades, during which he inspired countless students in Agriculture Science, Career and Technology Education, and Industrial Technology. He began his career at Pleasanton Independent School District and also taught at various school districts, concluding his tenure at Crosby High School. His dedication to education extended beyond the classroom, as he coached National Range Judging teams and shared his love for plant identification, hunting, and fishing with his grandchildren.
In addition to his impactful teaching career, Jim proudly served in the United States Marine Corps as a Sergeant and Recon Marine. His military service, marked by leadership, radio operations, and expertise in demolition and mine warfare, instilled a strong sense of discipline and commitment to community service in his life.
After retiring from education in January 2001, Jim transitioned to the oil industry and became co-owner of Underbrink Oil, where he continued to contribute to his community.
Jim was preceded in death by: parents Cornelius "Corny" and Adelaide Underbrink; siblings Gary Underbrink, Bill Underbrink, and Ann Robinson.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Judy Jane Wallace Underbrink; daughter Jennifer Jeaneen Underbrink Pigg, her husband Joel and their son Quinten Wallace Pigg; son James Jason Underbrink, his wife Tammie Krpec Underbrink, and their children Hunter James Underbrink, Fisher James Underbrink, and Tess Lane Underbrink; brother Charles Underbrink; sister Margaret Pendaz; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Monday, February 2, 2026 beginning with visitation at 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral service at 11:00 am. at Hurley Funeral Home
Pleasanton, TX. Graveside Service will be at 2:00 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery 14853 CR 1568, Odem, TX.
Jim Underbrink will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain alive in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
