James Ray VanGilder, 92, of Fairmont, peacefully passed away on Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Oakland V.A. Hospital of Pittsburgh. James was born on May 3, 1933, the son of the late James W. and Mary Jane (Croft) VanGilder.
James served his country in the United States Army. He then went on to be a truck driver and construction worker, which he loved. James was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved working on several types of cars. One of James favorite pastimes in his later years was bird watching, especially the eagles that flew over the house.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 47 years, Rosella (Mullens) VanGilder; five children, Scott VanGilder and his companion Joyce, Rosella Brinegar and her companion Robert, TeLena VanGilder and her companion Alex, Lois Bowyer and her companion George, and Theresa Satterfield; one brother, Paul VanGilder; one sister, Virginia Mundell; twelve grandchildren, Jonathon VanGilder, Tyler VanGilder, Josh Bowyer and his companion Tracie, Jonah Bowyer and his companion Julie, Josephine Satterfield, Dusty Jackson and her companion Chase, Stormee Wood and her companion Ryan, Shane VanGilder, Gary VanGilder Jr., Hunter VanGilder, Bradley VanGilder, and Shina VanGilder. He is also survived by several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Virginia (Cowger) VanGilder; four brothers, Fred VanGilder, Joe VanGilder, Cliff VanGilder, and John VanGilder; four sisters, Anna Mae Rager, Martha Louise Valentine, Cheryl Judy Morgan, and Barbara McGown. He is also preceded in death by one son, Gary VanGilder.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the Pittsburgh Veterans facility and the Crestview Nursing Home. Also, they would like to thank Steve and Dawn Grimes for all of their loving care.
Friends and Family may call the Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm, and on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. A service will follow the visitation on Wednesday at 11:00 am with Pastor Steve Stemple presiding. An interment will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery, in Grafton, West Virginia, where full military rites will be accorded.
