GOUVERNEUR- It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James A. Wells, age 78, who passed away peacefully on Friday August 15, 2025 at Canton Potsdam Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Calling hours will be held on Friday August 22, 2025 from 6 to 8 PM at Frary Funeral Home, 33 Park Street in Gouverneur. A funeral service will be held on Saturday August 23, 2025 at 11 AM with Pastor Ben Lalka officiating, immediately followed by burial with Military Honors in the Hermon Cemetery.

James was born in DeKalb Junction on February 11, 1947 to the late Donald and Virginia (Piercy) Wells. He graduated from Heuvelton Central School in 1967. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and deployed to Vietnam where he proudly served with the 1st battalion 1st Marine Division, Charlie Company, until his tour ended in December of 1969. James married the love of his life Donna Gardner on February 23, 1974, together they built a life filled with family traditions, travel and many life long friends.

James is survived by his wife, Donna, a daughter Tina (Scott) Walrath of Chase Mills, his grandchildren, Chelsea Walrath, Austin Juillet, Josh Walrath, Kassandra Walrath, Jake Walrath, great grandchildren Adalyn Juillet, Braxton Walrath, a sister Grace Ramsey, and several nieces and nephews, and a few special "adopted" grandchildren.

James was a kind and loving man, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be remembered for his storytelling and his one of a kind sense of humor that will live on in the hearts of anyone who knew him. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, whether it be hunting, fishing, camping, traveling. He also enjoyed farm life and spending time with his family.

James family would like to extend a heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to his loving and devoted caregivers.
