James Franklin Whisnant, born on May 16, 1934, in Jefferson, Georgia, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2024, in Athens, Georgia. He was a dedicated self-employed logger and grader who devoted his life to his work and family.
James leaves behind a loving family that includes his daughter, Jamie Lyn Brown (Jonathan), and his son, Wayne Billings. He was also blessed with a large and cherished family of 16 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his legacy.
He is survived by his beloved siblings: Claudia Wallace, Wanda Hart, Eunice Whisnant, Mary Lou Norris, and Alice McDaniel, as well as his brothers JW Whisnant, Ken Whisnant, Teddy Whisnant, Homer Whisnant, and U.V. Whisnant.
James was preceded in death by his father, Emanuel David Whisnant, and his mother, Emmiline Smith Whisnant. He was also predeceased by his wife, Dovie Mae Chrisly Whisnant, along with several of his children, including Larry Whisnant, Steve Whisnant, Mike Whisnant, Joann Whisnant, and Lisa Whisnant. His brothers Buster Whisnant, Daniel Whisnant, Marvin Whisnant, Harold Whisnant,Ray Whisnant, and Nathaniel Whisnant, along with sisters Louise Sargent, Susie Grindle, Peggy Looney, and Jeannie Whisnant, also preceded him in death.
The community is invited to pay their respects at Ivie Funeral Home, located at 1053 S. Elm Street, Commerce, GA 30529. A visitation will take place on October 1, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, followed by a funeral service on October 2, 2024, at 11:00 AM at Ivie Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Oconee Baptist Church Cemetery, 4554 GA 82, Commerce, GA 30530.
James Franklin Whisnant will be remembered fondly for his kindness, strong work ethic, and unwavering love for his family. He touched the lives of many and leaves behind a lasting impact on all who knew him.
