James Whitler Obituary

James Anglin Whitler Jr.

Jul 13, 1955 - Sep 1, 2025

James Anglin Whitler Jr., 70, died Monday, September 1, 2025, at his home, surrounded by loved ones. Mr. Whitler was born July 13, 1955, in Salisbury, NC, to James Anglin Whitler Sr. and Carolyn Burke Whitler. He graduated from Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. before attending Western Carolina. Jim went on to work as Head Buyer at W.R. Vernon Produce Company for over 40 years and took great pride in his work. He loved spending time with his family, particularly playing with his grandsons. Jim loved all things endurance sports, especially cycling. Some of his best memories were riding his bike in North Carolina's mountains and on the Blue Ridge Parkway. He completed the Escape from Alcatraz Endurance Challenge three times. Jim also had an affinity for rock music and fast cars.

Left to cherish his memory are his son, Jason Robert Whitler (Joanna) of Winston-Salem, N.C.; grandsons, Bodhi and Luke Whitler; devoted companion, Kristin Marie Frantz; and sisters, Diane Gries of New Bern, N.C., Alice Farmer (Curt) of Dallas, TX and Beth Buresh (Sheldon) of Winston-Salem, NC. Also surviving are numerous caring nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Ardmore United Methodist Church. A visitation will follow the service at the church. The family would like to thank Trellis Supportive Care and Home Instead for their excellent care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ardmore United Methodist Church 630 S Hawthorne Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or to the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation 717 S. So sorry to hear about Jim's passing. I got to know Jim from an early age through my grandfather and his relationship with the Vernon Family. Before I knew it, I was working the midnight to noon shift at Vernon's Produce while also being a full-time student at Wake. Jim made me feel right at home, despite being the clear odd man out at the job. That was in the mid-1980s and by the looks of things, Jim should very well be proud of his role in that very successful (and tough) business. I am sure he will be missed by all those who did business at Vernons as well as by his family.
