On January 6, 2026, country roads carried James Elton Whitley, 93, known to many as “Pops”, home to be with his Lord. He was born on March 10, 1932, at home (during a snowstorm), a few miles outside of Richmond, Virginia. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1950 and served on active duty as a Field Radio Operator until 1952. After returning home to Hilton, NY, he focused on his college education and went on to build a successful career in banking. He continued his service with the United States Marine Corps Reserves for 16 years and remained deeply involved in his community through the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club.

His legacy lives on through his five children: Terri (David) Lee, Holly Whitley Brown, Mark (Emily) Whitley, Joni (Brian) Anderson, and Jay Whitley; along with 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the stories he shared, the family traditions he kept alive, and the laughter he brought to every room. His favorite saying was, “I ain’t much baby, but I’m all I got!”

A memorial service with military honors will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Semper Fi Barn, 314 Furman L. Smith Memorial Highway, Central, SC 29630, followed by a “Whitley-style” celebration. Family and friends are invited to play cards, toast to Pops, and share stories, memories, and laughter—just as he wanted.

Our family is forever grateful for the exceptional care, compassion, and respect shown by the staff at both Vickery Park Assisted Living (Central, SC) and Wren Hospice (Greer, SC). Many of them shared a special bond with Pops, and knowing he was so loved and cherished brings great comfort. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to Wren Hospice or The Navy Relief Fund.
