Jan Sonnek

Jan Sonnek, 60, passed away peacefully at home on November 12, 2022. He was born to Norbert and Marjorie Sonnek on May 31, 1962 in Austin, Minnesota and grew up in Milaca, Minnesota. Jan graduated from Milaca High School and entered into the US Army. He faithfully served his country until August of 1988, when he was honorably discharged. He moved to the Des Moines area where his daughter, Jaclynn, was born in 1987. Jan worked as a mechanic for Bridgestone Firestone for 30 years. Jan began his battle with cancer when he was diagnosed in December of 2015. Jan married Lorensa Campos in 2016. He became a grandpa in 2021 to his granddaughter, Leighton.
Jan deeply cared for his friends and loved his family. Some of his favorite things to do include: playing golf, 4-wheeling, snow skiing, riding his Harley and fishing. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings. Jan was called many things by those he loved; Husband, Dad, Brother, Uncle, Son, Grandpa, Friend and "Brother from another Mother."
Jan is survived by his wife, Lorensa; daughter, Jaclynn (Luke) Claas of Lees Summit, Missouri and granddaughter, Leighton; step-children, Gabriel De La Cerda and his son, Gabriel III, and Vanessa (Luke) Burgus and their son, Aiden, all of Des Moines. He is also survived by his siblings, Norbert Sonnek, Jr. (Judy) of Foreston, Minnesota; Chad Sonnek (Anne) of Vicksburg, Mississippi; Michael Sonnek (Edie) of Foreston and Zita Sonnek of Foreston; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Joyce, and two infant brothers, Roger and Kirk.
Visitation will be held from 4-7pm, Wednesday, November 16, 2022 at Iles Westover Chapel. A Rosary will be recited at 7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00pm, (Noon) on Thursday, November 17, 2022 at Basilica of St. John, 1915 University Avenue, Des Moines, IA. (Additional visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church) Interment will follow at 2:00pm, at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
