Jan C. Stromme, 70, of Colchester, Vermont, passed away unexpectedly on October 16, 2024. He was born on January 7, 1954, in Burlington, Vermont to Patricia and John Stromme.
Jan graduated from Burlington High School in 1972. After graduating high school, his daughter Amy Stromme, with her mother Dawn was born. Jan began his career as a welder with Vermont Structural Steel and continued with Hazelett Strip-Casting and then working on oil rigs out west. He married Martha (Farnham) Stromme in May of 1981, they shared 30 years of marriage together. They welcomed their son Michael Stromme in 1988. Jan went into the real estate business and began his own company, Market Time Realty and then started Market Time Vending. After eventually deciding to retire, he found joy in working alongside his son Michael at his company, Stromme Properties in Richmond, Vermont.
In 2012, Jan met his loving partner, Victoria Barney. Together, they created a life filled with travel and adventure, laughter, love and making unforgettable memories along the way. They found that with merging their circle of friends together, they would go on to have an active social life beyond measure. Caring deeply for those around him along with Victoria, they were a support system together for their family and friends and most importantly, for each other. Their countless trips to many different places across the country, dancing together, talking and being around their family and friends were a true testament to the kind of love and care they had for each other.
Jan always had an adventurous spirit and a love for the outdoors. This led him to have a life full of hobbies and interests such as camping, fishing, hunting with his son in Anticostí and going to deer camp in Montgomery with his friends, golfing, and being on the water. His greatest passion became gold mining when he purchased gold claims in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. It was in Alaska that he spent several summers enjoying this hobby, even building his own Hovercraft and bringing it to Alaska to use. He became certified for scuba diving on Lake Champlain and used this newly found skill to scuba dive and dredge for gold in Alaska. He was always surrounded with his best of friends from every stage in his life who enjoyed fishing adventures together on Lake Champlain and the countless memories taking road trips to Florida. Jan always enjoyed having conversations about history, the country and always had a story to go along with whatever came up. His life experiences made him an expert on many things, and he was very passionate when sharing his views on life. Jan always found great joy and pride in his grandsons and watching them grow and he embraced Victoria's granddaughters as his own, creating cherished memories with all of them over the years.
He is survived by his daughter, Amy Stromme, and her partner, Paul Kotulsky, grandsons Nathan Buckley, Ian Buckley (fiancé Alycia Boudreau), and Ethan Buckley, his son Michael Stromme (partner Katie Cooper) and grandson Evan Stromme. He is also survived by his partner, Victoria Barney and her children Brian Barney and his daughters Tara and Saige, Gregg Barney and his partner Annette Wilson and his daughters Chesnee and Francesca and Jaime Lyn Barney and her daughters Ava and Macy. His siblings Evelyn, Carol, Jack and Rick, along with many nieces and nephews also survive him. Jan recently lost his best friend Sadie, the most loyal dog whom he is now reunited with.
