Jane Davis – 94
Jane Davis, 94, of Clayton, DE, passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Dover Place Assisted Living in Dover, DE.
Born on May 26, 1931, in Smyrna Landing, DE, Jane was the daughter of the late Harry F. and Elizabeth F. (Bennett) Virdin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister- Doris Virdin Carrow in 2018. Jane also lost her husband, J. Irving Davis-on this same date, 11 years earlier-a fitting and tender reunion for a partnership that lasted for 64 years.
A proud member of the Class of 1949 at John Bassett Moore (Smyrna) High School, Jane was honored as May Court Queen that same year. In 1950, she married "the one" and began a life of hard work and shared dreams, cultivating the land across several J.M. Davis farms in the Clayton agricultural community, including Meadow Lawn Farm-a cherished family farm established in 1928.
A devoted wife, mother, and farmer, Jane embraced the rewards and realities of rural life with quiet strength and unwavering pride. She was a steadfast presence on the farm for decades, supporting her family in all their endeavors and leading by example with grace and resilience.
Jane held a lifelong passion for Standardbred racehorses and took great pride in the many horses raised, trained, and raced throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Her days were filled with love for animals, both big and small-alongside a green thumb that brought her gardens to life. She found beauty and peace in nature and enjoyed the rhythm of life outdoors in all kinds of weather.
She was a longtime member of the Delaware Farm Bureau and a proud supporter of the Smyrna FFA Chapter, championing youth and agricultural education throughout the community. Jane will be remembered for her tireless work ethic, generous spirit, and deep-rooted love for her family and farm. Her legacy of kindness, humility, and perseverance will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Jane is survived by her son, Jay Davis (Kara) of Clayton; her grandson, Taylor Davis (Morgan) of Clayton; her brother, Harry Arthur Virdin (Ann) of Smyrna; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
Her family finds comfort in knowing that she is now reunited with her beloved husband and that the seeds she planted in her lifetime-through both her work and her heart-will continue to grow and flourish.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 South Main Street in Smyrna. Interment will be private at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Jane's memory be made to the Clayton Fire Company or the Smyrna/Clayton Rotary Club.
