All are invited to share in celebrating the loving spirit who Jane was. Dress in bright colors for her funeral to help us celebrate her entry into Heaven.
Jane Marion Hauer, age 92, lifelong
Shakopee, Minnesota resident, entered Eternal Life on Sunday, November 9, 2025.
Jane was a proud product of Shakopee. Born there on November 4, 1933, Jane was the third daughter of four girls born to George and Rose (Deutsch) Scherkenbach. She graduated with the Shakopee High School class of 1951. In later years, Jane took occasional college classes to continue her education.
Jane was an extraordinary woman. At age 18, Jane married Jim Hauer and was blessed with six children. They were a farming family. They built a homemade of Redwood in 1961 in a rural, agricultural area overlooking the Minnesota River Valley; the area later became known as Hauer's Addition. When she and her husband divorced, Jane raised her children largely by herself in that home, and she resided there until her recent death.
In the late 1960s, Jane became the store manager for the Montgomery Wards catalog department store in Shakopee. Following 15 years there, Jane took a position with the Minnesota Women's Correctional Facility in Shakopee. She managed an Industry Program, helping inmates build work skills for life outside prison. She retired after 11 years of working at the prison.
Jane especially enjoyed giving time to her church, assisting at St Mark's as an altar server, lector, and minister of Holy Communion. She helped prepare dozens of funeral luncheons over the years. Jane also participated in a church quilting group, which donated the quilts they produced.
During her adult life, Jane regularly donated blood to the
American Red Cross. Her contributions totaled gallons of blood over those years. She also volunteered in several organizations, including the Scott County Public Health Department, where she showed up every Friday with a platter of home-baked cookies. She was an active member of the Jaycees and helped with the Hospital Auxiliary.
Jane loved to sing and had a passion for the music of Frank Sinatra. She had an affinity for birds, especially cardinals, whose figures adorn her home in many forms including statuary and on light fixtures, Christmas trees, mobiles hung from the ceiling, metal yard signs, and covering her mailbox. Jane also loved pineapples-not only the edible ones, but also the multi-color lit-up one on her side table, her ceramic spoon holders, and the pineapple-shaped porcelain pieces, among other items.
Nearly everyone who knew Jane also knew she loved any shade of the color pink. This included everything from her pink cowgirl hat to her pink-ink filled pen.
Following retirement, Jane traveled with her sister Ruth to far-flung places around the globe-China, Ireland, Czechoslovakia, Tahiti-as well as multiple trips to the Hawaiian Islands.
Jane was a dedicated mother and worked tirelessly to provide for her children. She took great joy in baking and was well known for her cookies and pies, among other delights. For holidays, Jane cooked bountiful feasts for family gatherings.
In younger years, Jane stayed active playing golf and as a member of a weekly bowling league. In later years, Jane walked local trails for 3 miles a day, picking up trash along the way and donating to the Catholic school's fundraiser whatever aluminum cans she retrieved.
Jane was a long-time fan of the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. She greatly enjoyed the opportunity she had in 2005 to visit the Twins clubhouse and interact with key players and pitchers.
Jane was a woman of fortitude, kindness, and love. We will remember her for the example she set as a strong and caring mother. She thoroughly enjoyed being with young children, especially her grandbabies and great grandbabies.
Jane is survived by her children, Jay Hauer, Jan and (Jose) Castañon, Jody Hauer, Joel Hauer, and Jennifer (Dan) Schmitz; grandchildren, Christine (Seth) Sherman, Jeremy (Erin Krenik) Hauer, Joelle (Matt) Lucas, Nora Rose Hencir, and Jenae Castañon; great-grandchildren, Claire, Mara, and Cooper Sherman; Jace and Rhett Lucas; daughter-in-law, Julie (Dale) Biertzer; sister, Ruth Goulet; nieces, Carla (Abba) Steinfeld, Keekoe (Ann Urriza) Goulet; nephew, Matt (Shannon) Telljohn; grandnephew Dylan Stafford; and many other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her son, James E. Hauer; son-in-law Greg Hencir; father, George Scherkenbach; mother, Rose Scherkenbach; sister, Betty ("Fitz") Fitz Maurice, and sister, Georgia Telljohn; and special aunt, Henrietta "Hankie" Deutsch.
Jane's family offers special thanks to the caregivers and aides- especially Cindy, Melissa, Christa, Sue, Mary Ellen, Laurie, Lily, and Suez-who helped her remain in her home until her death. The Park Nicollet Methodist hospice program nurses, in particular RN Darbi, provided assurances and excellent care at Jane's home.
