She attended Ensley High School, where she was active in all school events and clubs. She was a cheerleader in high school, made excellent grades, and was on the high school newspaper staff. She had many friends, girlfriends and many male suitors. She attended all of the high school dances and danced every dance.
Upon graduation from High School, Jane went to college in Tuscaloosa, Alabama at the University of Alabama, where she met and married Leonard Warren Larkin, Jr. ("Luke") on Dec 27, 1949. Jane worked in a variety of secretarial positions when she and Luke first married. With the birth of her first daughter, Lisa Love Larkin, she decided to be a stay-at-home mother. Luke then joined the Air Force and they moved around, living in Sacramento, CA, Las Vegas, NV, and Frankfurt, Germany, as they raised their 4 children.
Jane was always an active member of the Officers' Wives Club at all of the military bases where they were stationed. She held many leadership positions. She organized style shows that raised money for select charities in the community. She was active in the PTA at the schools her children attended. She was a Girl Scout leader.
After Luke got out of the Air Force, they settled in
Fort Worth, Texas. Throughout many the years Jane was raising her children, she often attended junior college and she took courses to enlighten herself. She loved learning and intellectual growth.
After 21 years of raising children and managing a household with expertise, Jane went back to work in 1970, and became a very successful Executive Secretary for Anadarko Petroleum
Corporation in
Fort Worth, TX for 17 years before her retirement. Once retired, Jane got involved with Vacation Bible School at Ridglea Presbyterian Church, Ft. Worth, where some of her grandchildren attended.
Fast forward, at age 72, Jane remarries to Mr. Ron Johnson in 2003, and relocates to Sun City, AZ. In Sun City, Jane became an active member of a Lutheran Church Knitting Club. This club knitted caps for infants, who were born prematurely. She and Ron hosted many monthly social gatherings in their neighborhood. Their goal was to "get to know their neighbors." This neighborhood had a geriatric population & everyone needed help. Ron and Jane split their time between Sun City, AZ (where Ron had a home),
Fort Worth, TX (where Jane had a garden home) and Anacortes, WA, where they spent 4 months of the year sailing the San Juan Islands. They even ventured 1/2 way to Alaska one summer. They had a 45 ft older, wooden yacht that slept 4 people comfortably and often had visitors.
In Jane's later years, she lived in a retirement high rise in downtown
Fort Worth, TX. As her needs increased, she moved to Southlake, TX to Silverado Memory Care.
Jane loved knitting, needlepoint, reading the news and staying up-to-date on current events, dancing (especially the jitterbug), sailing the San Juan Islands, traveling the world and experiencing different cultures, shopping for clothes, keeping a beautiful & organized home. She loved to travel, take pictures and return home to organize her pictures into a scrapbook, of which she had many. She never took a picture that she didn't write on the back of the photo the date, location and the names of the people in the picture.
