Dr. Jane Ellen Metzger Marks, PhD, was a young 77 year old, living in her adopted city of Virginia Beach for the last twenty-seven years. Our Lord called her to heaven on September 6th, 2024. Jane had a long, hard-fought battle with breast cancer, passing peacefully at home with family and friends by her side.
Dr. Marks, or you may know her by her personalized license plate, 'Dr. Jane,' was born in Inglewood, California on July 2nd, 1947. She was the daughter of the late John Metzger and Alice Blackstock Metzger. Left to cherish Jane's memory is her loving husband HL Marks, who was blessed with 51 years of marital bliss, her son of 40 years, Nicholas William Marks (Eagle Scout,) daughter-in-law Rashel Marks, Two lovely granddaughters, and her 91 year old brother, Bob Metzger, in California. She was predeceased by her 83 year old brother, John Metzger and her 80 year old sister, Joyce Lunsford, both also of California.
• Jane graduated Lennox High School, Inglewood, California in June, 1965.
• She went to UCLA - Westwood where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science & International Relations, graduating in December, 1970.
• She was a social Worker for Los Angeles County from 1972 - 1974.
• Jane graduated from Antioch University, March, 1984 with a Dual Masters in Family Psychology and Clinical Psychology.
• She served her internship at the Beverly Hills Woman's Clinic and received her State License in Marriage and Family Counselling in California, (MFCC) in January, 1986.
• She was an Adoption Counselor, taking her training at Planned Parenthood, Los Angeles, 1986.
• Jane graduated from Columbia Pacific University in August, 1989 with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
• For over ten years, she had her own private clinic in Westwood, CA and practiced there until she and her family moved to Virginia Beach in late 1997.
• In 2002 and again in 2015, she took Sewanee Universities four year course to become a Lay EFM Minster (Education for Ministry) in the Episcopal church.
• Jane also attended the Norfolk FBI Academy in June, 2008 where she became a Citizen Agent.
She was a 'history buff' and had a passion to travel the world and relive history. Jane, along with her husband, had traveled to 115 countries. Both are members of the Travelers' Century Club.
At All Saints Episcopal Church she created 'Movie Ministry,' a monthly movie event enjoyed for many years. Jane was also a cinephile and had a deep love for the cinema, especially movies from the twenties, thirties and forties. When she wasn't traveling the world and didn't have a book in her hand (which was rare,) she could be found with her family and friends enjoying a movie at home or on the big screen. She loved judging movies for two International film festivals, and student films at Regent Universities Film Department. Jane was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Virginia Beach where she enjoyed philanthropic work for the children of the world, and giving PowerPoint presentations about her travels. She especially enjoyed delivering Thanksgiving and Christmas meals every year to challenged families.
She loved writing and was a reporter for the 'Westwood Insider Weekly Newspaper' where she wrote articles on Infertility and other local subjects in the Los Angeles area. She was published in the Edgar Cayce ARE 'Venture Inward Magazine' and at All Saints Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach with articles on Movie Ministry. Jane also loved to write fiction and non-fiction.
Some of her many interests and hobbies were cinema, profiling, grief counseling, infertility, adoption, individual growth counseling, food and world history. She also had a working knowledge of French. Jane enjoyed reading about all categories of counseling, philosophy, religion, show-biz, history, travel and a detective novel once in a while. She was also a Porsche Enthusiast and enjoyed astronomy. Nothing excited her more than a new Idea. Jane will be missed by everyone.
- We love her so much. -
A Celebration of Jane's Life will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, 1969 Woodside Lane, Virginia Beach, VA 23454 on Saturday, October 5, 2024 at 10:00 AM. Reception follows.
