Jane Canter McDowell, 80, of Lexington passed away peacefully at home on April 4th, 2024. She was born on December 8th, 1944, in Lexington to the late Wilbur "Jack" Canter and Hazel Mae Canter.
Jane's life revolved around her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchild, family, and church. She loved to play golf with her husband and the women in the Fayette Women's Golf Association. She was the long-time bookkeeper at Picadome Elementary where she was selected as the Bookkeeper of the Year for Fayette County Schools. She continued the friendships she made there by attending the lunches with the retired employees' group, "The Tired and Retired," from Picadome. As Alzheimer's stole some of those activities away, she never lost her love of the people around her. When asked by her neurologist to write a sentence she wrote what she put her trust in: "I know God, He loves me." This disease could never steal that sweet essence of her. She will be greatly missed here on Earth, but we rest in the knowledge that her God has healed her body and mind.
She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 60 years, Herbert Lee McDowell; her children, Angela Horton (Scott), Aaron McDowell (Stefanie), and Haley McDowell; grandchildren, Maggie Bauer (AJ), Maddie Salee (Matt), Mallory Horton, Lexi Rose McDowell, and Lauren McDowell; great-grandchild, Harper Jane Salee; sister, Joyce Randolph; brother and sisters-in-law, Ronald and Malissa Hickey, and Becky Canter; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins; other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Wayne Canter; and her beloved pets, Moxie, Dixie, Rudy, and Rose.
Her family wants to say a special thank you to her caregiver, Karen Nagy, who helped us care for her with such sweet love for the better part of the last year. Bluegrass Care Navigators was such a wonderful blessing to us as we said our goodbyes.
Visitation will be from 4-7PM Thursday April 10th, 2025, at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home – Harrodsburg Road. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Friday, April 11th, 2025, at Bryan Station Baptist Church, 3175 Briar Hill Rd, Lexington, KY 40516 with visitation prior to the service beginning at 10:30AM. Burial will follow in Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Memorial contributions in her honor may be made to Bluegrass Care Navigators, or the Alzheimer's Association.
