Jane Phillips Obituary

Jane Hinds Phillips, 82, of Wadley, Alabama, passed away on December 12, 2025, at home, surrounded by family. Jane was born February 1, 1943, in Anniston to Julian M. Hinds, Sr. and Josephine M. Hinds (Martin). She graduated from Anniston High School and attended the University of Alabama, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She would remain an avid supporter of the Crimson Tide throughout her life, with friends suggesting she was perhaps the team's most vocal fan. A resident of Wadley for nearly 60 years, Jane retired from Southern Union Community College. She was a member of Wadley Baptist Church, where she served as Music Director and pianist for more than three decades. Music was an abiding presence in her life. She began performing early in life with the Girls' Sextet at Parker Memorial Baptist Church in Anniston, later with the University Singers at the University of Alabama, and with the Southern Union Sound, with whom she performed numerous times at Carnegie Hall. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wyner S. Phillips, parents, Julian M. Hinds, Sr. and Josephine M. Hinds, and brothers Julian M. Hinds, Jr. and Robert L. Hinds. Remaining to honor her memory include son W. Slay Phillips, II, daughter Chase Phillips Kilgore, son Julian Palmer Phillips (Brooke,) grandchildren Morrison Kilgore Rhoades, Evelyn Marguerite Phillips, Josephine Myrl Phillips, Leonard Palmer Phillips, great-grandchildren Jane Ryan Rhoades and Redd Chase Rhoades, and grandson-in- law Kenneth Ryan Rhoades. A private family memorial service will be held when the gardenias are in full bloom.
