JANE E. RICH

1926 - 2024

RICH, Jane E. Jane Erving Rich (King) was born July 7, 1926 and died peacefully January 15, 2024, aged 97 and a half, plus one week and one day. She was born in Norfolk, VA, and attended Hessian Hills School in Croton-on-Hudson, NY; school at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, where her father was teaching and where she was befriended by artists, including Anni Albers and Josef Albers; Shady Hill School, Cambridge; Windsor School for girls in Boston; Vassar College briefly; and the Nursery Training School of Boston. She was instrumental in advocating for tutoring programs in public schools for children with learning disabilities, co-founded the Castle School, a residential school for troubled teens in Cambridge, and served on the state Mental Health Board. She was the daughter of Julia Hurley King and James Gore King. She was married to Alexander Rich for almost 63 years, until his death in 2015, living in Cambridge and in Woods Hole on Cape Cod. She is survived by four children, many grandchildren, and numerous loved ones she cared for over the years; and those who lovingly cared for her, especially in her last serene years.
