Jane Sampson

        Monica Jane Sampson- known to many as Jane- of Saint Louis- formerly of Potosi- passed away at the age of 64 on Sunday, August 13th, in the company of beloved friends. Monica was the youngest child of Christopher Sampson and Della Mae (Sansoucie) Sampson.  Monica had been diagnosed with breast and liver cancer and fought until she could fight no more.  She is now at peace with her mother and father, her sister Beverly Sampson, and her beloved nephews, Christopher Clark and Bill Sampson, along with many loved family and friends.

        Monica was born August, 10th, 1959 in Ironton, Missouri, the youngest of five children born to Chris and Della. She was an energetic child with a streak of mischief.  While she loved her siblings, it did not prevent her from engaging in ploys to bring their parents’ discipline on them; she was often accused of creating “wounds” from her siblings that she had self-inflicted in order to solidify her position as the beloved baby of the family. Her tenacity and independent spirit was evident from an early age.

        Monica attend St. James in her primary years.  She continued her mischievousness in Catholic school, keeping the nuns on their toes. While doing so, she forged lifelong friendships with Jack, Kevin, Rhonda, Tammy, and Kathy.  She received baptism, first communion, and confirmation, where she took the name of the Saint Agnes, at St. James Catholic Church.  She attended Potosi Public Schools from then on. In high school, Jane was an active member of the band, playing clarinet, varsity cheer, and the National Honor Society.  She gained many friendships during this time. She graduated in 1977, a proud Trojan with a bevy of life-long friends.

        Monica attended Missouri State University in Springfield.  She graduated in 1981 with a degree in Business Administration.  Monica then moved to Saint Louis, where she resided for the remainder of her life.  Monica spent many years as a valued employee of MHS Legacy Group. 

        Monica was a voracious Cardinals fan, who attended many games with family and friends over the years.  She spent most of the summer of 1998 attending games in the hopes of seeing Mark McGwire break the homerun record.  In addition to her love of the Cardinals, she also loved philanthropy. Monica volunteered yearly for the Soulard Mardi Gras, where she helped with everything from the pet parade to the 5k.  She also volunteered to place wreaths and flags on the graves of veterans.  Monica was known for her caring nature and was always willing to help out for a good cause.  Monica was also a supporter of animal shelters and had adopted several pets over the years, including her demon cat Zoey, and her more amiable cat, Agnes, who survives of the home.  She spoiled her animals rotten and they loved her for it.

        Monica will be remembered for the love and friendship she offered to all.  She loved spending time with her family and her friends, especially at Melrose.  She will be remembered as the woman who led zoo trips for two generations of nieces and nephews and, as the fun aunt, always bought them souvenirs.  She had a smile that could light up a room and a laugh was infectious.  She will be missed dearly.

        Monica is survived by her sister Patricia (Emanuel) Clark, her brothers, Gary (Cathy) Sampson and Michael (Sue) Sampson, her nephew, Jason Clark, her niece, Katie Sampson, her niece, Amanda (Justin) Van Winkle, and her nephew Gabe (Jesse) Sampson, and her grandnephews and nieces: Cameron, Charissa, Finn, Greta, Gram, and Liam.
