In Loving Memory
Janell Fountain Herring, 87, of Leesburg, Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 11, 2026.
Born on May 8, 1938, in Bessemer, Alabama, Janell lived a life defined by love, generosity, humor, and deep devotion to family and friends. She was a beloved mother, "Grandmama," sister, aunt, teacher, mentor, and friend to many, and she shared her warmth, encouragement, and laughter freely with everyone she met.
A proud graduate of the University of Alabama, Janell was a devoted Crimson Tide fan and delighted in watching football games with her grandsons. Sharing Alabama football moments with her dear friends Jane and Jerry brought her particular joy. Her nieces and nephews, along with their families, always held a special place in her heart, and she treasured the close bonds she maintained throughout her life.
Janell will be most remembered for the love she shared, her great sense of humor, and the way she made those around her feel seen, supported, and valued. To honor her memory, family and friends are invited to hold close a fond memory of Janell and carry it in their hearts.
Janell is predeceased by her sister, Lourae Fountain Middleton, and brother-in-law, Robert M. Middleton, Jr. She is survived by her son Philip Herring and grandson Ian Herring; her daughter Christiana H. Franchet, son-in-law Gilles Franchet, and grandsons Alexis and Thomas Franchet; her son John Herring and daughter-in-law Kirsten Kress; and her sister Wanda Leigh Fountain Anderson.
A private celebration of Janell's life will be held with family.
