Janet Marie Benson was born on September 9, 1942, in Harrington, Delaware. She was the loving daughter of Herbert Flamer and Henrietta Rice, who preceded her in death. She peacefully departed this life on November 24, 2024, surrounded by her family.
Janet M. Benson lived a life full of joy, love, and faith. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Known for her sharp wit, warm sarcasm and gorgeous dimples, Janet was the life of any party! Endearingly referred to as the "telephone operator", Janet loved staying connected, using her trusty phone book to check in on everyone! She enjoyed hanging out with her besties; Jean, Robin, & Anitra. Janet was employed by Smyrna Chronically Ill Hospital in Smyrna, DE. She worked there for several years before resigning in 2000. She was once married to Milton Benson, of Harrington, DE.
She loved spending time with her family, playing card games, such as Spades, Bid-whist & Phase 10. Trips to the casino, traveling and listening to "oldies but goodies" brought her immense happiness. She filled every room with joy. She was a Philadelphia Eagles fanatic; however, she enjoyed watching all NFL games. Above all, she loved the Lord and expressed her faith through praise and worship, inspiring everyone around her with her devotion.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Adriene Thorpe, and two grandchildren Keyana Thorpe and Vincent Benson.
She leaves behind her brothers, Kenneth Thorpe Sr. (Ellentean), Ralph Benson, Dale Benson (Teresa), and Kevin Benson; her sister, Regin Scott (Billy); and her three children, Anthony Thorpe, Taunya "Tie" Monroe (Charles), and Desmond Benson; six grandchildren, Hasine Thorpe, Marcus Chester, Michael Thorpe, Julian Chester, Ebony Chester, Aaron Bowling, and Desya Benson; four great-grandchildren, Machi Chester, Ka'Liaa Baynard, Velaiyah Benson, Finnley Benson, Vincere Benson. Along with special mentions, daughters, Cynthia Duncan (Terry), Linda Thorpe, Bonita Benson; sisters, Jean Minor (James), Robin Shaner; and friend, Gary Carter. Her memory will also live on in the hearts of nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends, who will miss her deeply.
Her life was a testament to love, faith, and family. She will always be remembered for her vibrant personality, compassionate heart, and unwavering faith in God.
