Moosewoman, Janet Louise Hubert Townswick, age 78, of Bloomington MN, journeyed to the Spirit World on February 27th, 2025.
A remarkable woman, imprinting on the minds and hearts of so many, began her life born to John and Bertha Elgard of St. Louis Park MN. A badger spirit, she was not to be tamed. A mother at 13, her path unfolded.
Jan lived with no brake and full throttle, no fear, and strong heart convictions. She loved with empathy and passion and embraced a room full of friends and family. She never turned down throwing her leg over a Harley.
In her early years, Jan worked as a Heavy Truck operator. She met the world with toughness and grit. Jan possessed her father's spirit. She married her love, Gene Hubert in 1964. They raised three boys (Tracy, Troy, and Trevor) from their home in Richfield MN.
Jan became sober on February 11th, 1976 from drugs and alcohol and lived 49 years within this conviction. It was a life-changing choice that redefined her path. She pursued a counselor's degree in chemical dependency, from MCC (Minneapolis Community College), which would eventually take her to a private practice she operated from her home in Richfield MN. Jan then would lose her Gene to cancer in the fall of 1979. She can now embrace that love in spirit.
Through the years following, Jan pursued further into the spiritual realm of teaching as she was ordained as a minister and eventually a shaman through her relations with the Ojibwe nation. She was given her name Moosewoman. Jan loved her work and did so right to her physical body's end. She believed in mentorships and she studied with and honored many teachers who preceded her into the Spirit World. She is reunited today as they sit around the fire.
Jan met Robert Townswick at a motorcycle rally in the early nineties and they married in 1997. They shared many moments on the bike and shared their Nisswa MN home with many of her family and friends. She moved from her Richfield home to her Bloomington home in 1996. Here is where she worked and raised awareness and community for life-changing seekers. Her work as a facilitator of change would touch many hearts and souls. Moose medicine conjures the ability to know when the gentleness of deer or the stampedes of buffalo is necessary. She was gifted with this medicine.
Her later years presented many physical challenges, but she would always be open to a cup of coffee and some talk. She eventually crossed over within the comforts of her home.
Her softness will always be remembered, especially within those round, soft cheeks that when smiling warmed the hardest of souls. We will not say goodbye, but rather "Giga-waabamin Miinawaa". We will see you again.
Jan is preceded in death by her parents, John and Bertha Elgard, her husband Gene Hubert, her brothers Earl and Don Elgard, and her sister Joan Holter.
Jan is survived by her sons, Tracy Elgard, Troy Hubert (Shelly), and Trevor Hubert (Beth); her grandchildren, Kevin Elgard, John Elgard, Hannah Elgard (William), Candi Olsen (Matt), Aaron Blegen, Joshua Jurgensen (Jessica), Crystal Godush (Casey), April Ehmke (Mark), Kyle Hubert (Lauren), Shelby Matuska (Kyle), Harley Hubert (Samantha), and Joseph Hubert (Bailey); her great-grandchildren, William Bell, Anna Bell, Tavia Bell, Johnova Bell, Talia Spreckin, Caleb Blegen, Geneva Jurgensen, Clifford Jurgensen, Lily Godush, Colsen Godush, Chase Ehmke, Lorenzo Matuska, and Tallulah Hubert.
