Janet Mogel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, LLP - West 38th St. on Mar. 9, 2026.
Janet Lee (Seifer) Mogel, 77, beloved mother, grandmother, and wife, passed away on Sunday, March 8, at UPMC Hamot, surrounded by her family, after a short but hard-fought battle with ALS. Born on March 18, 1948, in Erie, PA, she was the daughter of the late James J. and Betty J. Seifer.

Janet graduated from McDowell High School in 1966 and married the love of her life, Richard Mogel, on August 16, 1969. She worked for Northwest Savings Bank for more than 20 years and was a faithful and active member of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Erie. She found joy in baking and gardening, as well as knitting and sewing, especially creating hats for cancer and chemotherapy patients at the Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute. She was also a dedicated member of Sew What, where she formed lasting friendships through her love of crafting.

Above all, Janet cherished time with her family. She never missed an opportunity to attend her children's and grandchildren's sporting events, school activities, and milestones. Her presence-steady, warm, and encouraging-was a gift to everyone who knew her.

In addition to her parents, Janet was preceded in death by her infant grandson, Mason Mogel Hosford.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 56 years, Richard; her children Kevin (Shannon) Mogel of Pittsburgh, PA; Michelle (Donald) Hosford of Erie, PA; and Jacqueline (Hans) Zinsli of Sydney, Australia. She is also survived by her treasured grandchildren Elizabeth Mogel; Haley and Lindsay Nieman; Aidan, Soraya, Landon, and Arianna Hosford; and Evan, Patrick, and Joshua Zinsli, each of whom brought her immense pride and joy.

Janet is further survived by her eight siblings: her twin sister Judy Waytenick of Iowa; Jeanne Lebastchi of California; Sue Flack of Ohio; Sally Reigel of Erie; Kathy Fogle of Ohio; Carol Jewell of Michigan; Nancy Herbst of Erie; and Jim Seifer of Florida; as well as many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

Her kindness, faith, and unwavering love for her family will be remebered always.

Friends may call on Thursday, March 12, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Blvd. in Erie. Services will be held there on Friday, March 13, at 9:15 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 2801 West 6th Street in Erie. Interment at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ALS Association (www.als.org).
