Janet Morris Obituary

JANET KIRK MORRIS, age 101, died July 9, 2024.
She was a very special person and deeply loved by her family and many friends. Janet was born September, 20, 1922 in South Amboy, NJ the daughter of James and Laura Kirk. She was the widow of the Reverend Thomas Highley Morris of Johnson City, TN. He was the former Rector of St. John's Episcopal Church in Charleston, WV. Janet and Tom were married in New York City on August 19, 1944.
Janet was a graduate of New York University's Bellevue School of Nursing and the West Virginia State College Public Health Administration programs. Janet served as the Nursing Coordinator for the West Virginia State Dept of Health, Division of Maternal and Infant Care. She lived a life of volunteer service as the weekend supervisor for the Sunrise Children's Museum and volunteer Director & Medical Records Auditor for the Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center, and served both the West Virginia Counsel of Churches and the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston, WV. Janet was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church's Vestry and Chairperson of the Altar Guild. She volunteered as parish archivist. Janet was a proud member of the Kanawha Valley Quilters Guild. She honored to received both the West Virginia Public Health Service Award and the State of West Virginia Governor's Service Award.
Janet is survived by her sons, James Highley Morris (Jim) of Bluffton, SC and Malcolm Graeme Morris (Mac) of Sarasota, FL, and daughters in-law, Ann Jernigan Morris (Bluffton, SC) and Jeannie Marie Hasse Morris (Sarasota, FL). She has 2 grandchildren; Margaret Ann Heckert and her partner Josh Smith in Charleston, WV and Collin Thomas Morris and his partner, Tess Doddy in Morgantown, WV and 4 great grandchildren, (Amanda/Axel, Forrest, Tori and Mena) in Charleston, WV. She has 2 grand nieces, Beth and Melissa Heilig and their 2 children, Matthew and Claire in Clover, NC. Janet is related by marriage to Laura Graham in Johnson City TN, Chrissie Baldridge in Gray, TN, Judy Slagle (Glenn) in Jonesborough, TN and Vicki Felker (Lon) in Johnson City TN.
Janet's body was donated for medical education to the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine, Gift of Body Program. Her remains will be received into the St John's Columbarium in Charleston WV, where she will join her deceased eldest son, Thomas Kirk Morris.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to St. John's Episcopal Church, 1105 Quarrier St, Charleston, WV 25301 (O): (304) 346-0359.

Where to start...Janet was a dear friend to our whole family. We knew her in Corpus Christi Texas where she, Reverend Tom and kids were our friends as we attended All Saints. We were so thrilled to be reunited when they moved to Charleston (my family had moved there the year before). We grieved with her after she lost her husband, our church´s minister. We so enjoyed being with her at many holiday gatherings. We couldn´t think of anyone better suited to manage my wedding or to take care of my daughter in the middle of the night as I went to the hospital to deliver my son. She gave me a love for quilts and the art of quilting. She was always such a helpful, calm, loving, smiling and giving friend and she will be missed. So sorry for your family´s loss.

Janet was like a second mother to Betsy and I. She and her family were our Church Family, both in Corpus Christi Texas and in Charleston WV. Never a Thanksgiving or X-mas Dallas/Washington football game occurred where our two families weren´t together. Janet exuded calm and her intelligent eyes always said she was actively listening and she that she understood. Loved your strength and faith. My condolences go out to all of Janet´s family... love you all!

I met Janet in 1989 at Goodwill Industries on the west side of Charleston, WVa. She along with some other volunteers operated a small vintage area inside where items were for sale. Of course I was enthralled and would be asked by her and another woman to volunteer. Not only did we sell but had many events for the clients. I will always remember Janet's dear personality and her drive to help others. To you her family, I send much sympathy for your loss.
