Janet Magill Bowling Moutz, 74, of Akron, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025.

A loving daughter of the late Dick and Bette (Magill) Bowling, Janet was born on January 24, 1951, in Lisbon, Ohio. She graduated from David Anderson High School in Lisbon and went on to attend Kent State University, where she was a proud member of the Chi Omega sorority and remained actively involved for many years after college.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in education, Jan returned to her roots to teach at David Anderson Junior/Senior High School, where she dedicated 25 years to her students. Even after moving to Mogadore, she faithfully made the hour-long commute each way, a testament to her deep love for her school, her students, and her Lisbon Blue Devils.

Jan will be remembered as a devoted mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and teacher. She was a lifelong lover of knowledge and reading, delighted by learning, answering trivia questions, hiking, telling a good joke, and entertaining those around her with her quick wit and warm sense of humor. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family and friends. Jan was a faithful member of North Springfield Presbyterian Church and dearly loved her church family.

In addition to her parents, Jan was preceded in death by her sister, Barb Born; her brother, Rick Bowling; and former son-in-law, Brigham Cowan.

She is survived by her daughters, Alyson and Lesley (Shane); her grandchildren, Erin, Gavin, Colten, Samuel, and Asher; her nieces and nephews, Lisa, Bryan, Jared, Jill, and their children; her brother-in-law, Jerry Born; and her sister-in-law, Joyce Bowling.

A service witnessing to the resurrection and celebrating Jan’s life will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at North Springfield Presbyterian Church, with the Reverend Patricia A. Moats officiating. Visitation with the family will take place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with a luncheon to follow in the church’s Christian Education Building.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Jan’s memory by donating books, which will be shared with various hospital floors. Growing up, her daughters often heard their mom say, “one more page.” Those pages — and the characters within them — brought Jan comfort during times of pain and isolation. It is our hope to pass along that same love and joy, offering others the comfort of getting lost in a good story when they need it most.
