Janet Navin Obituary

A gifted watercolorist and textile designer, she taught at Iowa State University and the University of Arkansas. Her award-winning textiles and landscapes appear in several museums including the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. After earning her B.F.A at Syracuse University and her M. A. at Iowa State with watercolorist Marjorie S. Garfield, Janet studied with artists Eliot O'Hara and John Pike. Additionally, she studied at the American School of Crafts.
Janet made several trips to Europe, each through Italy; a trip to Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore; and three trips to the British Isles. After studying mosaics in Ravenna, Italy, she designed and executed a large mural for Guardian Angels Catholic School in Rochester, NY.
She held memberships in several professional organizations including the American
Society of Interior Designers, the National Society for Historic Preservation, and the American Association of University Professors. Her name appears in the Iowa State Plaza of Heroines.
During retirement, she resided in California, Florida, and finally in South Bend, IN. Janet
Navin's survivors in the South Bend, IN area include niece Maralee Crandon; dear friends Cathy and John Littlejohn; Janice Bridges; Patt and George Kieffer; Karen Naue, and "adopted grandchildren" Emma and Larry Connors.
In Central New York, survivors include Connie Crandon (Baldwinsville) and Sheila Crandon (Lyons). Survivors located around the USA include nieces Joette (Joel) Youkhanna (CA); Joani (Craig) Southerden (VA); and nephews Daniel Lemmon (FL); David (Barbara) Lemmon (IL); and David (Karen) Crandon (TX).
Born in Baldwinsville, NY to the late Elbert and Ella (Krause) Navin, Janet outlived her siblings: the late Winifred (Lloyd) Crandon, John (Helen) Navin, Robert M. Navin, Grace (John) Lemmon, and Carolyn (Robert) Thomas.
As Janet requested, no funeral will be held. Inurnment of her remains will be in the Navin plot in Oakwood Park Cemetery, Syracuse, NY, under the direction of Falardeau Funeral Home. Contributions may be given to The Salvation Army, Bethel University (IN), or St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church (South Bend, IN).
