Janice M. Powell (née O’Neill), a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home on February 16, 2026. She leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family.

Janice was born on May 9, 1950, in Leavenworth, Kansas, to Francis Howard O’Neill and Betty Jean (Scoville) O’Neill. Proud of her heritage, she carried a deep appreciation for family traditions and close-knit community values throughout her life.

She earned her college degree from Emporia State University and remained firmly committed to education, instilling its importance in her children and grandchildren. On August 1, 1970, she married Darrel T. Powell. Janice devoted many years to being a homemaker, creating a warm and welcoming home that served as the heart of her family. She also built a career in real estate management, where her integrity and dedication were evident to all who worked with her.

A lifelong member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, Janice received the Covenant of Baptism and the Covenant of Marriage; her funeral service will be held at Winchester Presbyterian Church — the church that faithfully accompanied her through life’s sacred milestones. She enjoyed gardening and watching sports of any variety, she was a faithful volunteer at her church and for Meals on Wheels.

Janice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Darrel T. Powell; her two brothers, Dean O’Neill and Larry O’Neill; and her parents, Francis Howard O’Neill and Betty Jean (Scoville) O’Neill. Her strength and steadfast faith remained evident to all who knew her. She possessed a generous spirit and quiet wisdom that guided her family through life’s joys and challenges.

She will be remembered for her kindness, her unwavering love for her family, and the warmth she extended to everyone she met. Janice is survived by her three daughters, Michelle (Shannon) Keller of Topeka, Kansas; Melinda (Seth) Duell of Fayetteville, Arkansas; and Susie (Jeff) Brownback of Andover, Kansas. Her nine cherished grandchildren are Jessamyn (Knox) Tweed, Josi Keller, Joelie Duell, Silas Duell, Blaise Duell, Hensleigh Duell, Shepard Duell, JP Brownback and Luke Brownback. She also has two sisters-in-law, Debby O’Neill and Linda Warrick, and many nieces and nephews. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know and love her.

Memorials can be gifted to the Reformed Presbyterian Global Missions or the Midland Meals on Wheels.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026, 11:00 am, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am, both at the Winchester Reformed Presbyterian Church, 308 Delaware St, Winchester, Kansas 66097, with Pastor Paul Finley, officiating.
