April 4, 1944 – August 18, 2025

Janice Gail Treadwell Swetnam, 76, of Rankin, Texas, passed away on August 18, 2025. She was born April 4, 1944, in Monahans, Texas, to her mother Juanita Faye Howerton Murphey, and her adoptive parents Hershal and Emily Jane Treadwell.

Known to most simply as “Gail,” she spent her early years moving often with her family, living in many places across Texas before finally settling in Imperial by her seventh-grade year. It was there she met the love of her life, James Swetnam, and the two were married on June 23, 1966. Together they welcomed their daughter Shanna in August 1968 and their son Shawn in December 1970. They shared their lives and built their family in Imperial until James’ passing in 2014.

Gail later made her home in Rankin with her daughter. Family was always at the heart of her world, and she poured her love and strength into her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Shanna, and Ken Collins; her grandchildren, John Worthington and his wife Nicole Worthington, and Jennifer Worthington; and her great-grandsons, Blake Worthington and Brayden Worthington. She is also survived by her siblings, Vikkie Jones and her husband Gary, Alan Wayne Murphey and his wife Linda, and Christi Ruth McGuffin and her husband Jim; along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband James, her son Shawn, her granddaughter Kimberly Cheyanne, her mother Juanita Faye Howerton Murphey, her brother Raymond Lee Murphey, and her parents Hershal and Emily Jane Treadwell.

“For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the believers who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever. So encourage each other with these words.”

— 1 Thessalonians 4:16–18
