Janie Beecher Carter, age 91, of Baxley passed away Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Lakeview Retirement Center under the care of Regency Southern Care Hospice.
Mrs. Carter was born December 5, 1933 in Appling County to the late Ollie Beecher and the late Jessie Mae Wedincamp Beecher. She was a teacher and retired from the Appling County Board of Education. During her 38-year career, she taught at Screven Co. Elementary School, Appling Co. Elementary School, Surrency Elementary School, Fourth District Elementary School, Appling Co. Jr. High School and then 7 years at Altamaha Technical College. After retirement, she worked as a substitute teacher at Altamaha Elementary School and Glennville Elementary School and served on the Appling Co. Board of Education. Mrs. Carter was a member of the Appling Co. Retired Educators, Appling Co. Young Farmers, and the Pilot Club of Baxley. She was a member of Zion Missionary Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James W. Carter; brothers, Jesse and Howard Beecher; great granddaughter, Piper Carter, and son-in-law, Kenyon Lamb.
Mrs. Carter loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed working in her flowers, eating out, and crocheting, specifically making throws for all her grandchildren. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music.
Survivors include her daughters, Patricia C. Lamb of Jesup, Debi Hendrix (Ronnie Crosby) of Baxley; sons, Dale Carter of Baxley and Stephen (Janet E.) Carter of Surrency, sister-in-law, JoAnn Beecher of Baxley; grandchildren, Jason (Christy) Carter and Darby Carter, Andrew (Megan) Hendrix, Matthew Hendrix, Daniel (Rebecca) Carter, Joshua (Brooke) Carter, Megan Atkinson (Brian Twiggs), and Malanda (Dustin) Johnson; fourteen great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law also survive.
Funeral services will be held Monday September 8, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Williamson and Rev. Rick Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jason Carter, Andrew Hendrix, Matthew Hendrix, Daniel Carter, Joshua Carter, and Dustin Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Ima Dean Sapp, Mattie Nails, the Adult Sunday School Class of Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Caregivers of Lakeview Retirement Center and Regency Southern Care Hospice.
Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Swain Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Regency Southern Care Hospice (2311 East First Street Suite B, Brice Square, Vidalia, GA 30574), Lakeview Retirement Center (111 Stephens Ave. Baxley, GA 31513), or St. Jude’s’s Children’s Hospital (501 St Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959).
