Obituary for Janie Jarwin (Winter)
August 25, 1938 – April 21, 2025
Janie Jarwin (Winter), 86, passed peacefully on April 21, 2025, surrounded by love. A devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and woman of deep faith, Janie spent her life lifting others with her strength, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family.
Born on August 25, 1938, to Edgar Lee Medlin Sr. and Mabel Janie Medlin (Haas), Janie was raised with the values of faith, hard work, and compassion that she carried with her throughout her life. She was married for many wonderful years to the love of her life, Melvin Winter. Together they built a life full of love, laughter, and hard work.
In the early years of motherhood, Janie pursued her dream by attending Peggy's Beauty College, earning her cosmetology license. She lovingly styled hair in her in-home salon while raising her children. Later, she served her community through work in the local school cafeteria, followed by a successful retail career at Beautyco Beauty Supply, where she rose to manage several stores before settling at the Moore location. She later worked for Sally's Beauty Supply before retiring to focus on what mattered most to her-her grandchildren.
Janie loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. From playing bingo with her grandson Jeremy, to caring for Joseph, to summers in the pool with Whitney, Kristina, and Stephanie-her joy was found in those small, shared moments. She delighted in counting basketball shots with her great-grandson Ryan, reading and coloring with Emma, and cheering on little Reed as he played.
Janie spent her later years living with her daughter Janet, where she even lent a hand with Janet's aquarium service business. In August 2023, she moved to Tuttle Care Center for long-term care, where she continued to touch hearts with her gentle spirit.
A woman of strong faith, Janie was a longtime member of Christ Gospel Church. Her favorite Bible passage was Psalm 23, a reflection of the peace and strength she found in her relationship with the Lord. She believed deeply in working hard and doing every task "as if for the Lord."
Janie found joy in the simple things-birdwatching, springtime blooms, gardening with her daughter, and canning vegetables and homemade salsa. She also loved fishing from the bank at Lake Texoma, finding peace and pleasure in the quiet beauty of nature.
She is survived by her daughters Kathryn Jean West and Janet Russell (and husband Tommy Russell), and her son Steve Winter (and wife Lisa Winter); her grandchildren Joseph West, Whitney Dyer, Kristina Birge, and Stephanie Winter; and her great-grandchildren Ryan Russell, Emma Birge, and Reed Birge.
Proceeded in death by grandson Jeremy West.
Janie leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and devotion. Her life was a testament to grace, perseverance, and joy-and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
