Janie Bernadette Price, (known as Nurse Janie) age 96, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully on January 6, 2023 at her home with her devoted niece, Cynthia by her side. Janie was born on May 25, 1926 to David and Alberta (Reddick) Young. She grew up in St. Augustine attending St. Benedict the Moor School and graduated from Excelsior High School. Janie went on to study nursing at Grady Hospital in Atlanta in 1944. She returned to St. Augustine after graduation to begin her nursing career. During her career that spanned over 50 years Janie served as a private duty nurse, worked at Flagler Hospital and worked for many years at St. Johns County Health Department. She retired in the late 1990's. In a time where many could not afford medical care, Janie was the only option for medical assistance in her community. She spent countless hours giving of her time and skills, often in the middle of the night. She was a long time member of the St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church. She loved to read, play golf and she enjoyed baking. Janie and her niece Cynthia took classes on how to make dolls and many of her creations are kept in her home. Others are displayed at the Lincolnville Museum. Janie was very instrumental in the Civil Rights Struggle. Dr. Martin Luther King was a guest in her home during the Civil Rights Movement. She engaged in many speaking events, television news and newspaper interviews in St. Augustine and Jacksonville FL. During the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 signed by President Lyndon B Johnson, Janie Young Price was recognized for being a "Housemother for Civil Rights". Her street, formerly known as Central Ave, was renamed to MLK Ave. and her home designated a historic landmark. Recently in October Mrs. Price was given the "Mother of the Movement" award from the Network of Outstanding Women in the Power of Pink Summit 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her courageous efforts truly improved the lives of many. She was loved by many and will never be forgotten.
She was preceded in death by her parents, David and Alberta (Young), her husband, John Price, and a brother, Virgil Young, Sr. Janie is survived by her niece, Cynthia Dukes and her husband Lawson of St. Augustine, FL, a nephew, Virgil Young, Jr. of Gainesville; a grand nephew, David Mitchell of Seattle, Washington; a great grandniece, D'Aja Mitchell of St. Augustine; cousin Junko Williams and Margarita Elizarde of San Antonio,Tx and a host of family member, extended family members and treasured friends.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 pm on Monday, January 16, 2023 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1pm on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at St. Johns Family Funeral Home with Father Lawrence Peck officiating. Burial will follow at San Lorenzo Cemetery. My daughter Karrington, who was six at the time, had an amazing opportunity to meet and speak to Mrs. Price after mass one hot summer Sunday. Mrs. Price took her back in time, and shared with my daughter, the time she housed Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and how her neighbor's home was bombed trying to hurt Dr. King. In February of the following school year, Karrington had the opportunity to share her experience with Mrs. Price at her school's Dr. Martin Luther King's oratorical presentation. The audience, and judges were so impressed with her presentation, that she won for her competition for her grade band! I am so thankful, and because of Mrs. Price, both she and I will carry this experience with us for many years to come! We thank you again Mrs. Price! You will certainly be missed!

I am so glad that Nurse Janie Price generously gave her time to be interviewed by historians and filmmakers so that her memories and experiences will be shared with the future and continue to teach new generations. She was one of those who put the "Saint" in St. Augustine, and in the course of her long life left things better than she found them. Rest in Peace, old friend.
