Janis Collamore Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Ipswich on Mar. 18, 2024.
Janis A. Collamore, 76, of Rockport, formerly of Wakefield, North Reading and Vermont, passed away Sunday morning, March 10, 2024 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born in Melrose, she was the daughter of the late Raymond L. and Alice (O'Connor) Collamore. She was raised in Wakefield where she attended public school, and later went on to receive her undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Janis continued her education by earning her master's degree in Special Education from the College of St. Joseph in Rutland, VT.
Janis was a compassionate and dedicated Special Education Teacher for forty years. She began her career with Wakefield Public Schools. Her specialized teaching brought her to Proctor, Vermont where she taught at the town's Junior and Senior Schools. Later in her career, she taught at Methuen High School and Landmark School in Beverly. Applying her passion and experience in special education, Jan later went on to co-found the Northeast Consortium Embark Program at Salem State University. This program provided academic, community and vocational opportunities with profound impacts for its students and is still running today.
Janis resided in Rockport for almost forty years. Maintaining her home here was dear to her heart. She was truly multitalented. She enjoyed carpentry and woodworking, skills she learned from her beloved father. She was also an avid boater. She loved being out on the open water where she entertained friends and family for many years, creating countless happy memories.
She is survived by two sisters, Rae Currier and her husband Paul of Wakefield and Joy Hart and her husband Rick of West Rutland, VT; as well as one brother, Robert Collamore and his wife Linda of North Andover. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was predeceased by her close friend Patrice Grande of Rockport and will be dearly missed by her many devoted friends. She was a role model and a true inspiration to all who knew her.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Care Dimensions, The Kaplan House and the many friends who helped care for and support Jan during her illness.
A Celebration of Life for Janis will be announced at a later date. Contributions may be made in Janis' memory to the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 4 Paws Lane, Gloucester, MA 01930 or Friends of the Northshore Education Consortium, 112 Sohier Road, Beverly MA 01915. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, Gloucester. Condolences at www.campbellfuneral.com

Janis and I were high school friends. We both liked sports and joined intramural basketball and played games after school. She was very sweet. I am sorry to hear that she has passed. God bless her.

Janis, you loved life with great gusto! I always enjoyed your company. You introduced me to folk music. The Kingston Trio became our favorites. If I remember correctly, when you and I were walking up Outlook Rd. on our way home after school, you loved to sing, " The Lion Sleeps tonight." So many times in my life when I was stuck trying to make a decision, I would think of this wonderful saying of yours, "Indecision is so exhausting!" When we were in high school, you loved to have coke and brownies for breakfast!
My memories of you are all delightful and always put a smile on my face. We shared our childhood at Walton School, junior high school and WHS. You always hosted our sleep-over parties. Very little sleep and lots of laughter was had by all. Your mom was so brave! Your dad made us pancakes for breakfast and then without any further ado, he drove us home to sleep for the rest of the day. We loved those sleepovers in your playroom! Other favorite times are of your dad taking a car load of us skiing in NH, Gunstock, I believe. We´d get up at the crack of dawn on Saturday, ride up north and ski all day. What a super dad you had to take us all skiing. How about ski camp at Mt. Pero? So many fun times skiing there. The old stationary 1940 Ford drove that rickety rope tow and carried us back and forth up the slope. Remember that time when it was so blizzardy and cold in our bunk rooms that our toothpaste froze and we could scratch our names on the ice on the insides of the windows? We had no heat, water or electricity and all of the pipes froze, The only vehicles that could make it up the hill to rescue us, were hearses! We trudged into the hearses, were driven down the mountain to the funeral home where the undertaker´s wife had made a big pot of soup to feed us all! After we had eaten, we were back in the hearses being driven to the girls´ dorms on Plymouth State College campus. The students were on break so we slept in their rooms and stayed there until the pipes thawed and we had electricity back at the lodge. Laugh, laugh, laugh. We had no idea how serious things were. That adventure was really epic! I am sending you a big hug. "In the jungle, the mighty jungle, the Lion sleeps tonight." So glad that you are at peace. Say hi to Brenda. Love, Dithy

So sorry to hear this sad news. Janice was my back door neighbor. Her mother made great cookies! We went to Dolbeare elementary together and all the way through

I met Janis while working at the Northshore Education Consortium BUT I got to know her when her when our mutual friend Patrice invited me on the boat! Janis was always the captain. Those were beautiful days on the water. Janis was such a good hearted person and I got to know her better through the difficult days of her friends passing and after. She will be truly missed.
