Janis Yon Vancans

Join family and loved ones in celebrating the extraordinary life of Janis E. Vancans, 81, of South Woody Hill Road, Westerly, RI, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 24, 2024.

Janis was born in Riga, Latvia, to the late Vladislavs and Natalija Vancans. His journey began during World War II, when he and his family sought refuge from the conflict, embarking on a courageous journey by sea to the United States, entering through Ellis Island in New York City. From there, Janis' life became a testament to resilience, creativity, community spirit, and, of course, family.

A decorated U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, Janis earned both the Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge, among numerous other honors. He remained a steadfast advocate for veterans, dedicating time to Veteran's Affairs and fellow service members. In his middle years, Janis could be found riding his Harley Davidson with extra-tall ape hangers across Rhode Island and beyond as a proud

member of the Vietnam Vet's Motorcycle Club.

Janis was also a passionate runner, completing more than 15 marathons over his

lifetime. When running became challenging in his later years, Janis embraced new creative pursuits, growing into an award-winning bagpiper who was celebrated across New England. He further gave back to his community by serving as an Elder on the Board of Dunn's Corners Community Church Presbyterian. What's more, Janis remained a longtime friend of Bill W. and a pillar of support for those in need.

Many will remember Janis as a renowned carpenter and contractor who helped build the backbone of his beloved community. You will find Janis' legacy crafted into many of the beautiful homes bejeweling Watch Hill, Weekapaug, Westerly, Stonington, and the surrounding areas.

Above all, Janis loved his family. He is survived by his cherished wife, Lauren (Ahern) Vancans; his children, Destiny Vancans and her husband, Jonathan Nardelli; William Vancans; and Darcy Vancans. His memory is also celebrated by his brother, Juris Vancans, his loving granddaughter, Keileigh Crothers; and the many friends, compatriots, and family who were touched by Janis' endearing presence, including his vibrant sense of humor. Janis was predeceased by his sister, Ingrid Dambergs.
