Jannie Matthews Obituary

Jannie S. Matthews, 79, of Bloomfield, CT, entered eternal rest on Sunday, July 27, 2025. Jannie was born October 23, 1945, in Patterson, GA, daughter of the late Charles and Jessie Matthews. She was employed as a Program Technician with the State of Connecticut Department of Social Services and retired after 35 years of service. Jannie was a dedicated and faithful member of First Baptist Church, now First Cathedral in Bloomfield, taught ministry classes, and was a trustee for over 40 years. Her faith was very important to her, and throughout her illness and in the worst of times, all she wanted to do was go to church. Jannie was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, confident and dear friend to many. Above all, her greatest loves were her sons and her dogs. Jannie taught her sons the value of faith, family, respect, discipline, and how to treat people the way you would want to be treated. She would carry the dogs around the house with her, and you could just see the joy on their little faces, and you just knew they were loved and well cared for. Jannie had a smile that would light up the room and a hearty laugh that made you want to laugh right along with her. She was kind, compassionate, and generous with her time and talents, and the world was a better place with her in it. The passing of Jannie will leave a permanent ache in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Jannie leaves to celebrate her memory her two sons Kenneth L. Matthews and Jeffrey S. Matthews; grandchildren, Annette Lawrence, Brandon Matthews, Nathan Matthews, and Isiah; great-grandchildren, Kiandra Lawrence, Alilyana Reyes, Angel Rivera, La'Niyah Rivera, and Abel Lawrence; great-great-granddaughter, Amiyah Fellows; sisters, Mary Love Martin, Doris Elizabeth Ashe, and Vickie Miller, and a host of other close relatives and friends. Along with her parents, Jannie was preceded in death by her siblings, Betty Carolyn Matthews, Nora Lee Hayes, Charliemae Mote, Benjamin Franklin Matthews, Freddie Delmus Matthews, Joan Anderson, and Jesse Kate Matthews.
