Jared Weston

Jared Daniel Weston, 48, passed away Thursday. March 5, 2026, of causes related to a pulmonary thromboembolism. Jared was born on July 11, 1977, the eldest of five children born to Dan and Barbara Weston. He spent his early years in River Heights, playing soccer and riding bikes. He worked for his dad in construction building custom homes. As a student, he excelled in the arts as well as science. As a young man, Jared enjoyed visiting his grandfather’s farm. He took a particular interest in gardening and applied the principles of working with his hands and in nature to many aspects of his life.

After graduating from Mountain Crest High School in 1995, Jared served an LDS mission to Frankfurt, Germany. He returned home to attend USU, where he met his wife, Katie Nyman. They married in the Mount Timpanogos Temple on March 3, 2000. They became parents to three equally creative children, Lia, Dan and Porter.

He studied Industrial Design, graduating from BYU in 2003. Jared won a design award in a national competition, sponsored by the Lucite company, based on an idea he had for a walk-in shower with a faucet in the shape of a sunflower surrounded by grassy fields. He and Katie lived in Oklahoma, while he completed an internship, and Ohio, when he began working as a designer for Crown Equipment. He also worked as a designer for iFit in Logan for many years where he worked on high-tech treadmills and exercise bikes. At the time of his passing, he was a product manager over app development at Melaleuca.

After they returned to Utah, Jared’s yard became his playground. Every inch was used to grow something they ate or a playtime apparatus for the kids. Some of his most realistic and useful designs were the Halloween costumes he helped create for his kids. He was known for his creative problem-solving skills and frequently invented the things he needed around home and yard rather than heading to the store. At one point, he wanted to raise goats for milk and ended up learning to knit so he could make his own sweaters to keep the baby goats warm in the winter. He was an avid reader and loved to research new things. He amassed quite a collection of how-to books and boxed sets of classic fantasy novels. He was also known to tell the best, most outlandish bedtime stories and enjoyed making up songs to entertain the family when they were stuck in traffic.

He loved planning camping and hiking trips. However, he was also known for going off trail if he got there and discovered a new or better way. He loved the peace and quiet of fishing and would get up early in the morning to make sure he got the best spot, often taking his children with him.

Jared experienced periods of depression in his adult life and devoted time and energy to adopting new perspectives and coping skills. He was a deep thinker who tried to find all the answers to life’s most confounding questions and wanted to explore all sides of an issue before moving forward. In 2011, his questions pointed him in a new direction, and he chose a life outside of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He believed in walkable communities and was often seen walking to work no matter the weather. He also enjoyed cooking on Sundays and introducing his family to new foods while trying out recipes. He traveled to Taiwan or China for work a handful of times. Many of the pictures he brought back were of the food he ate that would make the average American cringe. His sense of adventure will be missed.

He is survived by his wife and children, of Providence, his parents, of River Heights and in-laws Ron and Laraine Nyman, of Lindon. He is also survived by His brothers Mark (Tamber), of Mendon, Brad (Diane), of Smithfield, Trent (BreAnne), of River Heights and sister Julia Gunnell, of Eagle Mountain.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, March 17th, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Cobblestone 2nd Ward LDS Church, 420 W. 100 North. Graveside services will be Wednesday, March 18th, at 2 pm in the River Heights/Providence cemetery, 925 River Heights Blvd. Arrangements are being coordinated by Cache Valley Mortuary. In lieu of sending flowers, the family suggests honoring Jared by planting flowers (or even a tree!) in your own yard since he loved to take walks through the neighborhoods to see all the diverse plants.
