Newton Grove, NC: Mr. Jasper Wade “J.W.” Jernigan, age 77 of Barefoot Road passed away on Monday, September 29, 2025 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Funeral Services will be 11:00AM on Friday, October 3, 2025 at Hood’s Grove Baptist Church in Newton Grove. Officiating will be Dr. Chris Lee and Rev. Dwight Braswell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Jernigan was born on August 7, 1948 in Harnett County to the late Wade and Mertice Johnson Jernigan. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Barefoot Jernigan; sisters, Geraldine Blackmon and Adell West. Mr. Jernigan retired from the Johnston County Sherriff Office as a correctional officer and was a tobacco and cotton farmer. He was a mechanic working on tractors and supervised the garden. Mr. Jernigan was a member of Hood’s Grove Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and trustee.
Surviving is his wife of 7 years, Shelby Lee Jernigan; sons, Jason W. Jernigan and wife, Darlene, and Chad M. Jernigan; granddaughter, Billie Jo Ryals; great-grandchildren, Jourdan Campbell, Kobe Campbell, and Calvin Adams; step-children, Kristie Gilbert and husband, Ricky, and Mark McGee and fiancé, Heather; step-grandchildren, Hannah and Leah Gilbert; sister, Evelyn Norris; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson and other times at the home.
