Jay Edwards Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 8, 2025.
Jay Charles Edwards, III, affectionately known as "Chucky," passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at the age of 56 in Indianapolis, IN. A proud resident of Zionsville, Jay lived with purpose, laughter, and a deep love for his family, friends, and faith. Born in Charlotte, NC to the late Jay Charles Edwards, Jr. and Doris Lee (Wilson) Edwards, Jay graduated from Myers Park High School in 1987 and proudly joined the U.S. Navy shortly thereafter, serving for eight years. Following his service, Jay continued his education at North Carolina A&T State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology (Electronics), and later an MBA from Pfeiffer University.
Jay's career was both impressive and wide-ranging, marked by a strong work ethic, natural leadership, and a deep commitment to helping others succeed. He held management roles at respected companies such as Philip Morris, Duracell, Alcoa, Coca-Cola, and most recently, the U.S. Postal Service. Wherever he worked, Jay stood out-not just for his expertise, but for his ability to uplift those around him. More than a manager, he was a mentor who inspired others to reach their full potential. Beyond the workplace, Jay used his platform to give back, donating uniforms and supporting local youth sports teams with the same passion and generosity he brought to everything he did.
A man of deep faith, Jay accepted Christ at an early age and joined Second Calvary Baptist Church in Charlotte, and later, after relocating to Indianapolis, became a member of Traders Point Christian Church. His belief in kindness, generosity, and service shone through in how he lived and loved.
Jay lived life to the fullest. He had a magnetic personality and a smile that could light up any room, he was full of energy, wit, and heart. Jay loved sports and was a standout athlete in high school, once scoring 50 points in a basketball game and earning a reputation for being able to jump higher than anyone else in the neighborhood. He proudly passed on his love for athletics to his sons, always making sure they were game-day ready with the best gear. Jay was a die-hard North Carolina Tar Heels and Carolina Panthers fan. He was also a movie buff-his all-time favorite film was Titanic, followed closely by American Gangster. Earlier in his adult life, he had a need for speed and style, riding around on his red '99 Kawasaki with chrome wheels, turning heads everywhere he went.
Jay leaves behind his devoted wife of 27 years, Erica Johnson Edwards of Zionsville; his sons, Jay Charles Edwards IV and Orin Jay Edwards, both of Zionsville; Dominique Funderburk of Charlotte; and his beloved grandson, Dominique Funderburk, Jr. He is also survived by his loving mother, Doris Edwards; siblings Kenney Edwards (Tonya), Letania Edwards, and Danica Edwards, ESQ (Latasha); along with a host of cherished aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jay is further survived by a loving extended family of in-laws residing in Georgia.
In addition to his father, Jay Charles Edwards, Jr., Jay was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Jay Charles and Ada Edwards, and Clarence and Lillie Wilson. A memorial service celebrating Jay's life will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at Traders Point Christian Church Northwest, 6590 S. Indianapolis Road, Whitestown, IN 46075. Visitation begins at 1:00 PM, with the service to follow at 3:00 PM, including military honors.
Jay lived big, loved deeply, and laughed often. His legacy of humor, heart, and humility will live on in all who knew and loved him.
