Jay Matthews Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chapman Funeral Home - Hurricane on Dec. 24, 2025.
Jay Allen Matthews 67, of Scott Depot, WV passed away on December 22, 2025.

He was born on April 23, 1958 to the late Troy and Glyda Mae Matthews in Charleston, WV.

Jay was a graduate of Sissonville High School and had a long career in trucking. He spent the first 15 years of his career driving locally in WV and was a member of the Teamsters. He spent the next portion of his career driving long haul traveling coast to coast. The remaining portion of his trucking career was spent driving hazmat on the east coast and locally before retiring from Houff Transfer Inc.

Jay had a big heart, charismatic personality, infectious laugh and could tell a story like no one else. Jay enjoyed camping, vacationing at the beach and relaxing in the pool. He could often be found grilling dinner on the deck or watching a NASCAR race on a Sunday afternoon. But above all he adored his family, friends and fur babies.

Jay is survived by his loving wife, Joan; daughter, Erin Franklin (Joseph) of Charleston, WV; step-children: James Black of Scott Depot, WV and Missy Orrick (Richie) of Wales, UK; grandchildren: Britton and Bella Orrick of Wales, UK; sister, Linda Cruickshank (Bill) of Sissonville, WV; brother, Dennis Matthews of Jacksonville, NC; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

A Celebration of Life for Jay will be 2:00 pm Saturday January 3, 2026 at Chapman Funeral Home Hurricane, WV with Pastor Richard Orrick officiating.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service.
