Jay Myers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 14 to Aug. 15, 2023.
Collierville - Jay B. Myers, devoted Husband, Father, and Grandfather, passed away on Saturday, August 12 in Collierville, TN after a months long battle with cancer at the age of 66.

Jay, a long-time Memphian, was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on Dec 8, 1956. When he was 9 years old, Jay and his 6 siblings moved to Memphis where his dad, Jerry Myers, became the head of the Better Business Bureau of the Midsouth for many years. Jay attended Holy Rosary, Christian Brothers High School (where he achieved his Eagle Scout Award) and eventually the University of Memphis.

After college, he worked for companies like Kodak, HP and ATS before starting his own company, Interactive Solutions Inc. (ISI), in 1996. Specializing in audio visual and video conferencing technologies, ISI eventually grew to over $20 million in annual sales and was recognized by Inc. Magazine seven different times as one of the fastest growing private companies in the U.S.

Jay was a lifelong Yankees fan and even attended several Yankees Fantasy Camps. At these camps, he had the opportunity to play alongside Yankees legends like Tommy John, Homer Bush, Daryl Strawberry and Jeff Nelson (who he got a hit off of).

Playing off his love of baseball and stories of perseverance, Jay wrote 3 books about his experiences in life and business: Keep Swinging, Hitting the Curveballs and Rounding Third and Heading for Home. With these books, he had the opportunity to share how he was able to overcome an embezzlement and a partnership buyout all while running and growing a successful business. In 2018, Jay sold ISI and went on to do public speaking engagements across the country including a TEDx talk in 2021 and hosted the "Extra Innings" podcast for 3 seasons.

Jay was an avid University of Memphis athletics supporter including basketball, football and, of course, baseball with the recently renamed "Jay and Maureen Myers Hitting Room" in honor of his family's contributions. He also served as an Executive in Residence at the University of Memphis Fogelman College of Business and Economics speaking frequently to classes of undergraduate and MBA students.

Jay was inducted into the Christian Brothers High School Hall of Fame in 2011 and he was inducted into the Society of Entrepreneurs in 2018. He was the first recipient of the Kemmons Wilson Emerging Business Award. He was active in numerous community organizations in the Memphis area including the Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts where he received the Silver Beaver Award for adult leaders and the Better Business Bureau of the Mid-South where he was on the board for 20 years. He was a mentor to aspiring entrepreneurs through the SCORE program.

Most importantly, he never missed a campout, swim meet, school play, awards ceremony, anniversary, birthday or family trip - no matter how busy he was.

He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Maureen Myers, son Jordan (Alexis) Myers, daughter Katie (Kevin) Quinn, beloved granddaughter Ariana Myers and his faithful dog, Walker. He is also survived by his brother Chris Myers and sister Diane Edwards and a far reaching community of family and friends - all of which he adored. He was preceded in death by his mother Dorothy Myers, father Jerry Myers, brothers Charles Myers and John Myers and sister Dolores Wido.

Friends and family will celebrate Jay's life on Saturday, August 19th at the Catholic Church of the Incarnation in Collierville (360 Bray Station Rd.) Visitation will be in the main sanctuary at 11am followed by the service at 12pm. A reception will follow in the church gym.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jay's honor to CBHS, Church Health and Page Robbins.

In memoriam and in perpetuity, the "Good Guy of All Time" award goes to Jay Myers. Affable, amiable and accommodating, he welcomed all with love and affection.
He even went so far as to embrace me, a New Yorker, who loved the Red Sox! I seem to recall a playful mention or two about the `Curse of the Bambino´, however.
My wife, Sheila, is a Walsh also, and I was welcomed into that Irish culture on many occasions with grace and love.
Our condolences to the entire clan and Jay´s legions of friends, colleagues and acquaintances. We were all fortunate to know Jay.

I only met Jay a few times, though I have heard so many wonderful stories of his mentorship to others and his kindness and love to his friends and family, and I loved his never ending smile. May his memory be eternal.

Heartbreak and deep sadness are the emotions I felt when I first heard of Jay's passing. Jay had a wonderful spirit about him that everyone around him recognized. A light of happiness.

We first met Maureen and Jay not long after our son Kevin shared with us, he was in love with their daughter, Katie, and they were soon to be married. Katie, a smart, beautiful girl whom I have had the good fortune to call my daughter-in-law, showed easily she was the product of two great parents, Maureen and Jay.

Through the planning of our children's wedding we learned of Jay's love of sports (Yankees and Memphis teams), particularly baseball. Being from Georgia, our big sports focus was supporting the Georgia Bulldogs (our youngest's alma mater), and the Braves. We had fun with Jay back and forth trying to persuade him to become a "Dawgs fan" too, knowing of course Jay would never abandon his beloved Yankees/Memphis teams. We sent him Georgia hats to wear and even pulled on his Yankee thread and took him to an Atlanta Braves game. Jay's happy spirit enjoyed the engagement as we all touted our teams' successes. I will also add he was a brave soul to wear that Georgia Bulldog hat in Tennessee territory, as southerners take their football seriously.

Jay was just a great guy, easy going, happy and kind. An accomplished man in both business and community. Many hearts are breaking...he will be missed. Maureen, I'm keeping you and your family in my prayers during this difficult time, I only wish I could be there for his Celebration of Life with you. He will live on in your hearts forever.

Love, Cheryl [Keith in Spirit]

We met you all at the beautiful wedding of Alexis and Jordan...and have had the pleasure of catching up at so many the Wonais´s gatherings! It seemed like yesterday when we were chatting together in Minnesota at Dean and Jackie´s wedding...you both gave us great tips for our next Memphis journey!! You´re all in our prayers and hearts!!

It has been a few days since we received the sad news about Jay's passing and we are still in disbelief. It's hard to imagine because Jay had the biggest personality along with a true curiosity and zest for life. The only thing bigger than his personality was his smile. We will miss being greeted by a warm hug and a big smile.
We met Jay several years ago when our daughter Alexis started dating Jordan. All the relatives quickly grew to love Maureen and Jay. We would joke and tell them that they have a huge Chicago fan club. We are so thankful for the wonderful memories we have shared with the Myers.
What we are most thankful for is the amazing children Maureen and Jay raised, Jordan and Katie are outstanding in so many ways. We are blessed to have Jordan as our son-in-law. Truly, Jordan is the best son, husband to our daughter Alexis, and father. We know Jay and Maureen had everything to do with this.

We now share a precious granddaughter, Ariana. She has brought great joy to all of us. Jay instantly became the proud "PaPa". He lit up whenever she was around. We shared many wonderful memories, including Ariana's Christening, first Birthday, and first Santa visit. One of the sweetest memories was a trip to Chicago, Jay gave Ari two Memphis Grizzlies outfits that he had handpicked. Jay was looking forward to watching Ariana grow up. He even talked about buying her first car.

Jay, we know that you are not far away, so this message is for you.
As Ariana's grandparents, we will always talk about you and recall all of your many outstanding qualities. You will forever be present in our hearts and Ariana will know that she had the finest PaPa who loved her dearly and you will always be there to watch over her.

With love.

Jay was the brother in law I looked up to, respected and admired. A very devoted family man, as demanding as his business was, he ALWAYS put family and friends first. I am older than Jay, however, far from wiser. My only regret was not getting to know him much better...he was a man, father, son and all around gentleman I truly admire and will miss.
