Jay L. Smith, 86, of Salem Township and Shickshinny died on July 16, 2025, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, Pa.
Born October 5, 1938, in Berwick, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Claude and Verna (Wagner) Smith.
He graduated from Berwick Area School District in 1956. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960 as air traffic control and was very proud of his time served at a remote base in Iceland for a portion of his service.
On October 15, 1960, Jay married the former Dawn Bergsman and together they shared 65 years of marriage.
Jay always had a love of cars and was self-employed as a mechanic for many years before exploring work at PPL/Talen. He was involved with many civic organizations including Shickshinny Volunteer Fire Company, Shickshinny Volunteer Fire Police, Luzerne County Emergency Management, Boy Scouts, and Former Northwest Area School District Board Member.
Along with his wife he is survived by three children, Megan Shetterly and her husband Doyle of Hunlock Creek, Michael Smith of Salem Township and David Smith of Salem Township. There are three grandchildren: Steven Smith, Morgan Smith of Berwick and step grandson Travis Shetterly.
There will be a private burial for immediate family members at Pine Grove Cemetery, Berwick, PA.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mayo Funeral Home, Shickshinny.

Jay, you have made your final flight into the wild blue yonder´s. You are now relieved from your post. A job well done fellow veteran. America thanks you for your service to our country in the defense of freedom. The final volley has sounded and taps is about to begin, ending a successful career as a nation´s defender. Have a smooth flight airman.
