Jean (Ballard) George, age 97, of Mechanicsburg, PA, died on Thursday, April 25, 2024. Jean was born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late John D. Ballard and Marion Ballard. In addition to her parents, Jean is preceded in death by her three sisters: Anne Dunlap, Mary Martin, and Nancy Ballard.
Jean’s survivors include her loving husband of 54 years, John Reid George Sr.; her three step-children, Ellen (George) Smith, David George (Diane), and John George Jr.; three step-grandchildren; her three nephews, Thomas Martin (Joyce), Wayne Dunlap (Emily), and Wesley Dunlap; three grand-nieces and three grand-nephews.
Jean graduated from Winchester-Thurston School in 1944 and Wellesley College in 1948. She attended Mechanicsburg Presbyterian in Mechanicsburg, PA. Jean retired from the Institute of Medicine in Washington, D.C., where she served as a grant writer. Jean raised millions of dollars for various medical organizations. She was a member of the Harrisburg Choral Society, the Philanthropic Educational Organization, and the New Dominion Chorale. She will be dearly missed by those who were fortunate enough to have known her.
All are welcome to join Jean’s family at her greeting of family and friends on Thursday, May 2, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a service beginning at 2:00 p.m. all at Bethany Village in The Oaks Activity Room (Mechanicsburg); with Reverend Emily Sutphin officiating. Jean’s family invites everyone to join them for a time of food and fellowship immediately following the service. Cremation will be private.
