ROCKINGHAM — Jean Morse Shepard Cain was born November 22, 1932 in Richmond County, NC, to Roy Lee and Gladys Morse Shepard. Jean graduated from Rockingham High School and attended Women's College (UNCG) and earned a degree in accounting.
After graduation, Jean worked at Richmond County Bank as a teller. She met James W. Cain Jr. at a baseball game. He told her on the first date, "Girl, I am going to marry you!" He did.
In the early years of their marriage, they owned and operated the Western Auto in downtown Rockingham and built a small home in Hamlet. After selling the business, they built a home in Rockingham which was their residence for 55 years. During their marriage, they enjoyed many activities together, such as bridge, tennis, cookouts, travel, trips to the beach, and of course, shagging. They were both devoted members of First United Methodist Church of Rockingham. After James' death in 2002, Jean continued to enjoy life. She taught line dancing and enjoyed her children and grandchildren.
Jean is survived by two daughters, Teresa Pearl (Rick) of Garner and Ivey Sutton of Louisburg. Her grandchildren are Emily Taylor (Alex) of Cary, Sam Sutton (Alyssa of Sanford and Robert Pearl of Garner. She had seven great-grandchildren, Evie Taylor, Via and Willow Sutton, Peyton, Nick, Keegan and Zoe Pearl. She is also survived by her sister, Doris Goodman of Rock Hill, and several nieces.
The family would like to thank Richmond County Hospice, caregivers Darlene Covington, Vicki Covington, Denise Quick, Teresa Graham, Shanese Green and other family and friends who have been supportive during this time.
Service will be held at First Methodist Church in Rockingham on Sunday, February 22 at 3 p.m. Visitation will be prior to the service from 1-2:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. Burial will follow the service at Eastside Cemetery. Watson King Funeral Home is serving the family.
