Beloved mother, grandma, great-grandma, and dedicated teacher, passed away at her home on October 13, 2025. Age 84 years. Jean lived a life filled with laughter, love, and a commitment to education that touched the lives of all who knew her.
Jean was born on June 26, 1941, in Saginaw, MI, to the late Dora Williamson. She graduated from Merrill High School and continued her education, receiving a Master's degree from Central Michigan University. Jean married Gaylord D. Goward on August 22, 1965; he predeceased her on April 2, 1998. A passionate and committed educator, Jean taught at Hemlock High School, retiring in 1996, touching the lives of countless students with her patience and wisdom. She will continue to support education through a scholarship fund in her name for graduating students pursuing a college degree. Jean loved traveling with a group of dear friends, taking trips all over the country. She especially loved their annual trips to the U.P. to see the changing colors. Jean was an avid reader and pet lover, especially her cat, Sid.
Surviving are her two children: Lonnie (Rebecca) Goward and Cara VanWormer; three grandchildren: Ashley, Zachary, and Garrett; two great-grandchildren: Thomas Dean and Aria Jean; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at W. L. Case and Company Funeral Directors, 125 E. Saginaw, Merrill, MI 48637. Pastor Jim Doran will officiate. Honoring Jean's wishes cremation will take place following. Friends are welcome to visit with the family from 10:30 am until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Merrill Public Library, Jonesfield/Lakefield Fire Station, or to your local animal shelter.
