Jean Morgan Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 11, 2025.
Jean Roberts Morgan passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2025, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She was 97 years old.

Born in Raleigh, NC Jean was the daughter of the late Benjamin Robinson Roberts and Louise Harris Roberts. She grew up in Durham, North Carolina and attended St. Mary's College in Raleigh for her freshman and sophomore years. In 1947, Jean began at the University of North Carolina, where she was active in the Pi Beta Phi sorority, graduating with a degree in English.

Jean spent much of her youth at her family's cottage in Atlantic Beach and returned there often. She loved animals and owned dogs for most of her life notably two poodles given to her by her best friend and a bossy shih tzu named Lucy. Jean developed a strong interest in decorating and worked for Harvey Gunter Interior Design until her move from Durham to Greenville South Carolina in 1971. His influence fueled her love for interior design for the rest of her life.

In 1984, Jean married Frank Morgan and moved to Houston Texas. From there they traveled the country by automobile. Jean returned to Durham after Frank's death in 1996. Now retired, she took up painting and over the years produced a large body of work.

Jean's first marriage was to James Oscar Holt, Jr., with whom she had two children who survive her, Eliza Holt Miller and James ("Jim") O. Holt III. She is also survived by a grandson, Daniel Byrd Miller IV, two granddaughters, Catherine Miller Gambrell and Emily Robinson Holt and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister Mary Louise Roberts Fetner.

Beyond her family, friends, dogs and painting, Jean's greatest love was chocolate; we will honor her memory with a Celebration of Life (including Chocolate) in Durham.

Donations in memory of Jean can be made to American Cancer Society.
