Jean Elizabeth Mosby was born on September 6, 1941 to the late Cherry and Nettie Speed at Gallinger's Hospital in Washington D.C. Jean was educated in the D.C. public schools where she graduated from Eastern High School.
Jean married her first husband Maurice Guy, and from this union they had a son, Maurice Guy Jr. Later, Jean married Horace H.D. Mosby, her beloved husband of 63 years, and together they had five children. Jean worked alongside Horace to develop their business ventures, and their partnership was the foundation of their success. Together they launched several successful businesses, including nightclubs and restaurants (Twilight Zone and Safari-A-Go-Go), liquor stores. (Triangle Liquors and Montana Liquors), and a 119-unit apartment complex in Southeast DC.
She was known by everyone for her love of singing, music and time spent with those she loved most, her family. She cherished her time spent with her children, grandchildren and extended family often entertaining all with her beautiful singing. Her smile would light up a room and her laugh was contagious.
Jean was lovingly devoted to her family, she was often found in the kitchen preparing them large lavish meals and loved gathering everyone together over a delicious meal for quality time spent with one another telling stories and reminiscing about their time working at their various businesses. She brought immense amounts of joy, laughter and kindness to all her who knew her.
Jean was deeply committed to her faith. She was a devoted Catholic for over 60 years, a member of the Sacred Heart Church for 10 years and a devoted parishioner of Ascension Catholic Church from 1990 until her passing. While raising her children, she would read frequently read them passages from the Bible.
Jean was an active member of the church choir; you'd find her many Sundays filling the church with her beautiful singing voice. In her spare time, she would frequently visit senior living homes to share her love of music and singing with the residents, particularly on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Jean enjoyed boating with her husband and was an active member of both the Seafarers Yacht Club of Annapolis and the Neptune Yacht Club of Baltimore.
Jean was proceeded in death by her parents, her daughter Melanie M. Mosby, her sisters Jackie and Julia, and earlier this year, her loving and devoted husband Horace. She was also preceded by her siblings, Cherry Speed, Jr., Terry Speed, Catherine Speed and Joy Speed.
Jean is survived by her children, Maurice Guy Jr, Horace Mosby Jr., Marilyn Mosby Martin, Michael A. Mosby (Sarah Carlson Mosby), and Kenneth N. Mosby; stepdaughters, Wanda D. Mosby, Jacqueline E. Mosby, and Shelia R. Chenier (Maurice Chenier); grandchildren, Marcus Guy, Maurice Guy III, Henri H. Mosby, Danielle Mosby, Tomiko Mosby, Miyoko Mosby, Joshua R. Carlson, Keith Reed, Kevin Jones, Kristin Jones, Monique Chenier, Shena Chenier, and Jordan Chenier; siblings, Carlos Speed, Joyce Speed and Kim Speed; sister-in-law Mildred Speed; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Jean's memory will forever live on in it the hearts of all who knew her. Her legacy of service, love, grace, faith and generosity will be greatly missed and cherished.
