Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara "Jean" Burdette Young, better known as Nana, passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on November 6, 2025, free of pain and surrounded by love. In her final moments with each of us, she simply said, "I love you more"-words that perfectly captured what she showed us all throughout her 82 years.
Born and raised in Starr, South Carolina, Barbara was the daughter of Harper and Grace Burdette and big sister to Jimmy and Mike Burdette. She married her high school sweetheart, Jimmy Young, and together they built a beautiful life, raising two children, Marty and Marla.
Barbara's greatest joy came from her faith and family. She was devoted to her church and her deep belief in Jesus Christ, ensuring her children were introduced to Him at a young age. She taught Sunday School, led Awanas, sang in the choir, and always arrived with a casserole and a cake for every church gathering. Just as she devoted herself to her church, she poured the same love and commitment into her family-never missing an opportunity to show up, support, or encourage.
She welcomed her daughter-in-law, Ligia, and son-in-law, Andy, into the family, loving them as her own and grateful for the happiness they brought to her children's lives.
While she cherished being a mother, her most treasured title was "Nana." Her grandchildren-Jamey, Jesse, Jennifer, Harper, and Gray-were her pride and joy, and her love only deepened as she became a great-grandmother to Jace, Caroline, Jea, and Martie. To each of them, she offered her lap, a seat on the counter to bake, and unconditional love.
Nana was a homemaker in the truest sense of the word. Her home was always open, her stove always warm, and her table always full. She had a gift for making everyone feel cared for-especially through her legendary Southern cooking. Her biscuits and gravy, pound cake, chicken and dumplings, and sweet tea were famous among family and friends, always made with love and always exactly what you needed. If you weren't feeling well, you knew exactly where to go-and what meal would make you better.
She dedicated her life to caring for others-her children, grandchildren, and the many people blessed to call her family, friend, or neighbor.
Nana's legacy is one of love, faith, and family. She taught us to pray, to trust in Jesus, and to love our family and each other-no matter what.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Monday, November 10th, at Union Baptist Church. Burial will follow the service at Iva City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 pm prior to the service.
Though our hearts are sad in her absence, we find comfort knowing she is with her Lord and Savior and reunited with her loved ones-especially her beloved son, Marty. We are forever grateful for her 82 years of love, laughter, and prayer, and we will always hold close her final words: "I love you more."
Catch ya later, Nana…
