Jeanne Prevost Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rhodes Funeral Home - Washington Avenue on Jul. 21, 2025.
Jeanne A. Prevost, 70, a beloved mother, sister, aunt, friend, and lifelong educator, departed from this earth on July 10, 2025, at her home in New Orleans, LA. A lifelong resident of New Orleans, she was born on August 12, 1954, to Herman Prevost, Sr. and Emelda Prevost. Jeanne graduated from Xavier University Preparatory High School in 1972 and earned a Bachelor of Arts Special Education from Dillard University of New Orleans.
Jeanne devoted over 33 years of her career to the Jefferson Parish School System, where she served as a passionate and committed special education teacher. She provided individualized instruction and support to students with disabilities, ensuring they had access to the general education curriculum and were equipped with the academic, social, and emotional tools needed for lifelong success. Jeanne was deeply devoted to the well-being of her students, always preparing them for life beyond the classroom. Her impact extended beyond academics-she also led the girls' flag team, coached volleyball, and actively contributed as a member of the teachers' union. Jeanne's commitment to teaching extended beyond the classroom; she was a mentor to many young educators and a faithful advocate for educational equity.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Jeanneda Luke (Derek Luke), along with her cherished grandchildren, Nova Luke and Atlas Luke. Jeanne is also survived by her four sisters and brother: Charmaine Prevost, Valerie P. Roussell (Owen Roussell), Moureen P. Blackwell (Glenn Blackwell), Darrilyn P. Broussard (Kevin Broussard), and Herman P. Prevost, Jr., as well as a host of nieces and nephews whom she adored.
Jeanne's accomplishments were numerous. She was a star athlete in high school, earning the title of MVP in volleyball at Xavier Prep and contributing to the basketball team. Her dedication to student athletics was evident in her involvement in officiating and supporting girls' sports throughout the New Orleans area. Jeanne was one of the originators of the Emelda Prevost Scholarship Fund, which continues to support students in their educational pursuits.
In addition to her educational and athletic contributions, Jeanne was an active and esteemed member of the Kacuwas Social and Pleasure Club, where she fostered community spirit and camaraderie among its members. Her vibrant personality and infectious laughter brought joy to all who knew her.
Jeanne Prevost's legacy is one of compassion, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the students and school community she served so faithfully. Her legacy will live on through the lives she touched, the students she inspired, and the love she shared with her family and friends. She will be deeply missed lovingly remembered.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at St. Katherine Drexel Church, 2015 Louisiana Ave., New Orleans, LA on Thursday, July 24, 2025 at 10:00am. Visitation will begin at 8:00am – 10:00am. Interment: Mt. Olivet Cemetery, New Orleans, La. Arrangements entrusted to D.W. Rhodes Funeral Home, 3933 Washington Ave., New Orleans, LA 70125.
