Jeannette Jan Bailey Schermerhorn, 90, passed away on April 7, 2023, at Baystate Medical Center. Born in Springfield on June 29, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Lee Van Dyke and Alice N. (Neal) Schermerhorn, Sr. Jan lived in Longmeadow and Wilbraham during her childhood years.
After receiving her bachelors degree in education from Wheaton College, she taught in California, and then returned to New England to live and work in Connecticut. Jan taught in Milford before becoming a kindergarten and first grade teacher in the West Hartford Public Schools. After retiring from teaching, she moved to New Britain.
Jan was an avid traveler and had visited numerous countries in her lifetime. She was also a lover of art and a talented painter. Her passion for art led her to be a trustee and serve on the Council of Advisors at the New Britain Museum of American Art for many years. She also enjoyed taking photographs of all of lifes moments.
Jan is survived by her brothers, Lee Van Dyke Schermerhorn, Jr. & wife Joan of South Windsor, CT, and Neal Y. Schermerhorn & wife Sandra of Monson, nieces and nephews, Honey Schermerhorn of London, England, Lee Van Dyke Schermerhorn, III & wife Montar of Oak Harbor, WA, Holly Daly & husband Stephen of Ambler, PA, Eric Schermerhorn & wife Anne of Pasadena, CA, Heidi Price & husband Glenn of Fort Myers, FL, Alice Kempf & husband Ronald of Monson, Carol Lorion & husband Richard of Spencer, MA, and Neal Y. Schermerhorn, Jr. & partner Holly of Westfield. She also leaves many great, great-great, & great-great-great nieces and nephews, as well as many friends she had made throughout her life.
Jans burial will be private at Hillcrest Park Cemetery in Springfield. There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of ones choice.
