On June 22,2024, another bright star was received in heaven. My husband of 37 years, my best friend of 44 years, my soul mate, my Santa, my everything, passed away unexpectedly.
Jeffrey John Holmes, age 69, enjoyed his last day on Lake Murray, near his future home in Prosperity, South Carolina. He often called it Tranquility Base, for it brought his heart so much peace. We both had looked forward to starting new memories in South Carolina, being surrounded with our loving family.
Born in Hammond, Indiana, on February 23, 1955, raised in New Buffalo, Michigan, he helped with the family local greenhouse business. It was after his graduation that he moved west, to Steamboat Springs, Colorado and then became a long-time resident in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In his younger years, he loved the thrill of hang gliding, winter sports, skiing, and luge. He had spent two winters at Lake Placid, New York, training in the sport of luge. He loved the combination of speed and sliding! Summer time was time for riding together on the back of his Harley. Those are some of our happiest memories, as we explored Colorado mountains and even as far as the upper peninsula of Michigan together. Many miles were placed on his Harley Super Glide and Road Glide.
Throughout his life, he was involved in heavy construction and was able to operate almost any piece of equipment, given the challenge. He enjoyed his work, eventually becoming self-employed. An owner and operator with six semi tractor trailers for six years, involved with local road construction, heavy equipment hauling, and over the road, 48 states hauling. Later became a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 9. He served on the board of directors for two years. He loved helping in the community, and being an Eagle Scout himself, he became a troop leader to encourage other young men, including his son.
His pride and joy was in his son, wanting the best for him in life and always encouraging growth. Later being blessed by two grand boys, which filled his heart to no end. He would always mention how we are 'beyond blessed'. Warm recollections of memories, with special stories, for he will be near in spirit and in our hearts forever. He was that kind of man, who left his mark on this world with his hard work, love and caring for all. He made such a difference in all the lives he touched. He never met a stranger in his lifetime. It is amazing the circle of friendship he had made during his life, from his high school days to present, still keeping in touch with all. We will miss him dearly, his reassuring touch and words, but most of all his "squishy" Santa hugs to the grand boys. These memories will keep us close at heart till we meet again. As we look for that bright star shining in the heavens above, we know your love will continue to be in our hearts filled with comforting memories. You will be missed deeply, Rest In Peace, We love you forever.
Jeffrey was preceded in death by his father, David Leroy Holmes and mother, Sylvia Mae Holmes. He is survived by his wife, Diana Holmes, his son Nicholas Holmes, daughter in law Nichole, two grandsons, Oakley and Jackson Holmes. His Sisters, Cynthia Haughey, and Sheila Holmes, along with nephews Evan Haughey, Matthew Haughey, and Cameron Murrow. Great nephew and niece, Weko, Bowie and Rhodes.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at a later date.

My sincere sympathy, thoughts and prayers goes out to his wife, son, and family. I worked with Jeffrey for three years as a heavy equipment operator in Local 9. Jeffrey was an extremely professional heavy equipment operator as he took his job seriously with pride and to heart. He never said no and there was literally nothing he couldn“t do. Personally, he was an extremely kind and caring man and individual. I would always tell him good morning at the start of the work day. He was the kind of person you would always wanted to be around because you could always learn something from him. I would always joke around with him calling him "Santa" at times because he was such a caring and kind individual. Jeffrey you will be greatly missed! RIP Jeffrey, we got the rest of the work from here!
