Jeffrey Seppala Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home and Cremation Services - Crystal Falls on Mar. 18, 2026.
Jeffrey David Seppala, 59, passed away unexpectedly on March 12, 2026.

Born and raised in Crystal Falls, Michigan, Jeff-known to many simply as "Seppy"-was the kind of person who could turn any ordinary moment into a good time. Whether it was around a campfire, at the grill, or gathered around a table full of food, Jeff had a way of bringing people together with laughter, stories, and a drink in hand.

Jeff began his career working alongside his father, David Seppala, owning and operating the NAPA Auto Parts store in Crystal Falls. He later worked at Gassers Service Center in Iron River, Michigan. He eventually finished his working career as a 911 dispatcher for the last 16 years, continuing his lifelong habit of helping people when they needed it most.

Prior to the birth of his daughter in 1994, Jeff moved to Alpha Michigan and joined the Alpha Mastodon Township Fire Department. He later became Fire Chief and proudly served for in that role for 10 years. During his time as Chief, he led with pride and dedication securing grants that brought new equipment and fire trucks to the department as well as a new Township building for the community. His service to the firefighter community didn't stop in Alpha, he also served as the secretary and treasurer for the UP-Fire Chiefs Association for 6 years, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and service.

When Jeff wasn't working or volunteering, he was enjoying the things he loved most. He spent many happy hours fishing, brewing beer, making wine, gardening, and canning. He was also an incredible cook-someone who could seemingly make a great meal out of whatever happened to be in the kitchen. At any gathering, you could count on Jeff to be the grill master, the drink maker, and usually the loudest laugh in the room.

Within the last 2 years of his life, Jeff found a renewed and meaningful relationship with God and became a member of Faith Fellowship Bible Church in Crystal Falls. His faith brought him peace and added a new and important chapter to his life.

Of all the things Jeff was proud of, nothing meant more to him than his daughter, Caitlin. Watching her grow into the woman she is today was his greatest accomplishment.

Jeff is survived by his loving wife, Teresa Sawyer; his daughter, Caitlin (Ross) Miller; mother, Adrianne (Donald) Cheatham; step-mother Joanne Seppala; brother, Steve (Kerry) Seppala; nephews, Sam and Ben Seppala, Eric (Alyssa) Sawyer, and Andrew Sawyer; nieces, Lauren Seppala, and Melissa (Nick) Mueller; aunts, Jean (Bruce) Forstrom, and Carol Cain; brother -in-law and sister-in-law, Duane (Melissa) Sawyer; several great nieces and nephews and his loyal dog, Lilly, who was never far from his side enjoying car rides and fishing together.

He was preceded in death by his father, David Seppala; grandparents, John and Marie Mlinarcik, and Victor and Kathryn Seppala; aunt, Joann Waldo; uncles, Robert Seppala, James "Six-Footer" Waldo, and Horrace Cain; cousin, Nicky Waldo; father and mother-in-law, Robert and Dorothy Sawyer; and step-daughter, Jessica Santovasi.

Jeff will be remembered for his big heart, his quick humor, and his ability to make everyone feel welcome. He had a gift for turning strangers into friends and ordinary gatherings into celebrations. If there was laughter, good food, and a grill going somewhere, there's a good chance Jeff had something to do with it. He leaves behind a community full of people with stories that start with, "Remember that time Jeff…"

Even after his passing, Jeff continues to be a hero. Through the gift of organ donation, his legacy lives on by giving others a second chance at life.

In accordance with Jeff's wishes, no funeral services will be held. A celebration of life will take place in July.

"For the child of God that's far from home

The one who thinks they're too far gone

I'm throwing out another prayer in faith

Worn-out altars, tear-stained pews

Still, I won't give up on you

I believe that anything can change

When somebody prays."
