Jeroldine Pittman

Services for Jeroldine R. Pittman, 93, longtime resident of Montgomery County, will be at 1 p.m. on March 7th at the Potts Chapel in Independence, Kansas with burial to follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives beginning at noon and prior to the service.

Mrs. Pittman passed away on March 1 in Olathe, where she had been living in an assisted care facility for the last eight years. She was born on November 8, 1930, in Independence to Mason and Ruth (Torrance) Crain. She attended public schools and graduated from Independence High School in 1948.

She married Harry Vincent Pittman on September 10, 1950, in Independence. The couple spent 61 years of their married life living on their Rutland Township farm about 12 miles southwest of Independence. They operated Pittman Fertilizer Company, offering applications of liquid fertilizer and herbicides to area farmers. They also raised Hereford cattle and engaged in general farming operations. They were members of the First United Methodist Church in Independence.

Mrs. Pittman was known for her love of family, quilting, sewing and gardening, and was a longtime member of the SEK Quilters. Previously, she had been a 4-H leader in the Sunnyside, Country Boosters and Peppy 58 Clubs. She also joined a volunteer group that saved the Rutland Cemetery from decades of neglect. Other community work was with the local 4-H Extension Council and in soil conservation issues.

She was a longtime local election official and the Pittman farm served as the township polling place in the 1970s and ‘80s.

Another interest Mrs. Pittman shared with her husband was antiques and antique farm machinery. They were charter members of the Caney Valley Antique Power Association.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Lynn of rural Montgomery County, and Ruth Ann Pittman Falls of Olathe; one son, Robert Pittman of Dallas; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the First United Methodist Church of Independence, Caney Valley Antique Power Association or Crossroads Hospice.
