Jerry Carroll Combs

Jerry Carroll Combs, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on March 12, 1939, in Mt. Airy, North Carolina.
Jerry graduated from Franklin High School in Mt. Airy, NC, before serving his country with honor in the U.S. Army for four years and eight months. Following his military service, he embarked on a successful career with Sears Roebuck and Company, where he served as a District Manager in Wilson, NC, and later as a Store Manager in Manteo, NC. Jerry earned numerous management and sales awards with Sears. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to become the owner and operator of Berry's Used Cars later in his career.
Jerry and his family spent ten years in Wilson, NC, before moving to Manteo, NC, where he resided on Roanoke Island for 49 years. His life was a testament to the values of hard work, community service, and family devotion.
In his leisure time, Jerry loved to fish and was a member of the Milltail Creek Hunting Club. He was very passionate about the Masonic Children's Home in Oxford, NC, Shriner's Children Orthopedic and Burn Hospital, and The Dare County Shrine Club and Parade Unit, Outer Banks Beach Bums. His commitment to service extended to his membership in the Masonic Lodge - Manteo 521, where he was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters. He also served as President of both the Dare County Shrine Club and the Outer Banks Beach Bums. He was one of the founding members of the Outer Banks Beach Bums parade unit.
Jerry was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Ann O'Neal Combs, his parents, Armon and Etta Payne Combs, and his brother, Oliver Combs.
Jerry is survived by his daughter, Amy Hinnant, and her husband Tim Hinnant of Manteo, NC, his son, Neal Combs, and his wife Brandi Coleman Combs of Manteo, NC. Lovingly known as PopPop by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many others throughout the community, he is survived by four cherished grandchildren: Sydni Combs Midgett (Reed), Sammy Jo Hinnant Saraceni (Tom), Breanne Hinnant Wright, and Lane Hinnant (Melissa). His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren, Angelina, Alaina, Jase, Beckett, Olivia, Jackson, Corbin, Kora, Ben, and Jake.
A celebration of Jerry's life will be held at Twiford Funeral Homes, Outer Banks, on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 2:00 pm. Any time before the service, friends and relatives may visit the family at the Hinnant residence (138 Daphne Lane, Manteo). Following the service, friends and family are invited to a reception at the Dare County Shrine Club in Manteo, NC.
