Jerry Alton Kemp, age 71, of Spartanburg, SC passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025.
Born in Woodruff, he was the son of the late Grady Columbus Kemp and Jennie Verle Pruitt Kemp and the stepson of the late Joseph D. Hawkins. He was of the Presbyterian Faith.
He was raised at Thornwell Orphanage, now known as Thornwell Home for Children, in Clinton, SC from the age of three until fourteen years of age. Jerry was active in sports, especially football and baseball. He was a great swimmer and could do the prettiest swan dive. Known for his grand smile and kindness, Jerry loved fishing, wildlife, and dogs.
Jerry worked for Tietex International for 40 years, a faithful and devoted employee. He built and worked on over 50 machines, repairing and keeping them operational. Jerry was known as one of the best technicians by many of his co-workers. He trained many new employees prior to his exit.
He is survived by his two sisters and sister-in-law, Barbara J. Frady of Spartanburg, Yvonne Kemp Steadman (Jim), of Spartanburg, and Linda Kemp of Laurens. Jerry was loved by his many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, cousins, his Thornwell family, and many friends, including Coach Sanford Keyes of Clinton. He was predeceased by three brothers, Ned Kemp, Phillip Kemp, and Keith Kemp.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg for their kindness and interest in Jerry’s wellbeing. Their support and belief in doing God’s work was greatly appreciated. God’s light shines through them.
The family will receive friends from 9:30-10:15am on Saturday, September 13, 2025 at J. M. Dunbar Funeral Home, 690 Southport Road, Roebuck, SC 29376. Memorial services will follow at 10:30am in the chapel, conducted by Rev. Gary Hensley.
In memory of Jerry, contributions may be made to Mobile Meals of Spartanburg, 419 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302 and/or Covenant Baptist Church, 200 Evangel Road, Spartanburg, SC 29301.
